Fun Fact Friday
Bug presented for bilateral hind limb paresis in April. After examination, Bug didn’t have proprioception reflex in his hind limbs, however, still had deep pain reflexes in both hind limbs. Bug was diagnosed with Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD). IVDD is degeneration of intervertebral disc material that can result in a disc rupture (also known as a herniated or slipped disc). IVDD can occur due to degeneration, genetic predispositions (common in Dachshunds), or trauma. A neurological exam can help determine localization of the lesion, however, only diagnostic imaging (MRI or CT Scan) would be able to fully determine exact location.
Referral to a neurologist is recommended for further diagnostics and surgery. Surgical intervention is recommended for dogs that don’t respond to medical treatment, have lost deep pain reflexes or have worsening clinical signs. Medical treatment can be considered in certain cases, focusing on pain management with restricted activity. However, medical management sometimes can take weeks to see improvement. Physical therapy is also recommended during recovery. We are so pleased to see Bug respond well to medical therapy. He has fully recovered! We will miss seeing Bug for rechecks, but are so happy to see he is doing well!
