Bittersweet red panda update ❤️ If you’ve visited us recently, you might have noticed our red panda kits are growing up fast as they are approaching their first birthday! Both of our kits, Katara and Sokka, are part of vital breeding recommendations from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan (SSP).

Katara has already moved to her new Zoo, and is settling in well. We will be sure to share the news once her new facility is ready to announce her arrival. Sokka will be moving to his new facility in the fall, updates to come soon. While we will miss them, these moves are a huge milestone. By creating their own families, they are playing a crucial role in conservation breeding to ensure a bright future for this endangered species.

Join us in wishing them well on their new journeys!

P.S. Mom Zan and dad Kendji will remain at our Zoo. They are also a breeding pair, and we hope they will have more kits in the future!

Sniff, sniff 🐽

The nose knows! Red river hogs have an incredible sense of smell and long, muscular snouts that act like shovels. Using thousands of scent receptors and the ability to feel vibrations in the ground, they can easily sniff and dig out hidden treats beneath the soil.

In honor of National Smile Day it’s presented by Delta Dental! 🦒🦷 Just like humans, adult giraffes have 32 teeth in total, however, if you look closely at a giraffe’s “smile” and you’ll notice they have no upper front teeth! Instead, they have a thick, leathery “dental pad” on the top of their mouths.

Smart Smile Tip: Giraffes may use a dental pad, but humans rely on healthy gums. Make flossing a part of your daily routine to keep your smile healthy.

Happy Word Otter Day! 💙 Did you know North American river otters have built-in swim goggles? They have a special third eyelid called a nictitating membrane that protects their eyes and helps them see perfectly clearly underwater.

Come see our river otters in action and you will find them running, splashing, and playing with some fun enrichment!
