The Opossum's Pouch Sanctuary, Rescue and Rehabilitation We assist anyone in finding help for orphaned, injured or misplaced opossums. Our mission is to educate those unaware of how amazing opossums truly are!

I network all over the US & help find rehabbers. I advise proper care until one is located. We are a non-profit 501-C-3, EIN, 36-4841372. The Opossum Pouch. This page was created for saving opossums in the South Carolina area as well as networking to save all in any location. This is Hank who has lived a harsh life. He can see but not very well. Hank has some recent loss of teeth and prefers his meals puree'd. There's also some neurological issues because he was kicked off of a deck! Thank goodness a neighbor saw this and scooped him up. I won't go into detail but the person kicking him was dealt with harshly by the neighbor! He's my hero!

Hank has a some confused days were he can't find his bowl but when he does, he clings to it!! I'm always there to guide him and I come up with as many varieties of smoothies as possible! Formula is always the base due to its excellent nutrition. Tonight was some blended papaya and banana in his formula. It's one of Hanks favorites!

I still have about 34 orphans on formula and 5 other adults on a puree'd diet. I'm yet again placing a donate tab, we're down to next to the last 5lb. bag. The orphans are getting older, still lapping formula but now eating solids as well. So it's 34 more mouths now to feed. Help is badly needed. THANK YOU to all who have sent formula, potty pads, items from the wishlist on Amazon and donated funds. I have every name and please accept my post here of thanks. You are all appreciated!

I wish people understood the damage done by rat traps, poison and glue traps. All are just inhumane and cause all animals to suffer. This little one's leg was caught in a rat trap. I zoomed in to get a photo of the swelling and tissue damage. I gave pain meds, antibiotics and hydrated. I've left food and formula for tonight. Poor little one just wants to hide and sleep. I'll let the stress of it all calm down a bit and we'll then get some X-rays to see if it's broken. Meds and rest will help tremendously for now.

This is not a great picture, however the finders sent this of an opossum that had been visiting their feeding station. He came up, barely walking, seemed weak and labored breathing. We met up immediately.

He's so old, teeth worn and broken, bite wounds on his rear leg and thigh that were trying to heal but still infected. Aside from the wounds he had diarrhea. If you have ever worked with a poisoned animal they can have a very distinct smell depending on the poison. I strongly suspect this poor old man has been poisoned. We have Vit K from the vet and I'm running Sub Q fluids in hopes of flushing him. I'm doing everything possible but poison is very hard to pull them through.

If there's a conflict with wildlife, call a rehabber and get some advice. We can often find a solution that doesn't include harming the animal. Wildlife Removal Services by law, kill the animals trapped. Please don't use them. There's always options and compassion cost you nothing!

Lizzy, who had all the bleeding from her ear is now awake! She was allowing me to syringe feed her but tonight ate and drank on her own. I couldn't hope for better progress in 4 short days. I've yet to see her set up or walk but just to know she's hungry and eating is a big step for her. Thank you all for the well wishes and prayers for her. She's not displaying fear of me or her surroundings which is classic of the brain injury. We'll take this day by day, she has a home as long as she needs one!

This is yet another older girl found walking in circles in a backyard. She's lost a lot of her fur from her back, she has a cataract in her right eye and vision in her left eye but it's poor. I checked her pouch and no babies but she's full of milk. The lady checked everywhere for any babies but found none. She is acting very depressed and earlier tonight only ate a small amount. I feel so sad for her. I took her some formula and just a bit ago and some scrambled eggs. I'm hoping she will feel like eating.

Animals have feelings and feel grief just as humans do. They are unable to understand the loss but they feel it. šŸ˜¢

This young female was hit by a car Friday night. A very caring guy stopped and took her home to get her safe. He found me late last night and we met at noon today. Looking at her left side, she only has a sore red spot on her chin. The right side shows she bled from her ear quite a bit. She hasn't attempted to set up, just sleeps which is normal for head injuries. They named her Lilly and she did take from fluids with a syringe which is keeping her hydrated. We will know more over the next few days.

Please stop and check on animals laying in or by the road. They are not always deceased. With head trauma, they are unable to respond normally and often times lay sleeping. Opossums are very easy to work with. Even laying them in the floor or seat of the car or truck until you can get home, then place in a large container, bath tub, with a blanket... shower with a blanket etc... Get them safe and search for a rehabber. Please NEVER leave them in or beside the road alive!! They will be hit again or wander off and die a horrible death.

Six of my orphans left for pre-release enclosures and in 2 weeks will be soft released. I'm not going to lie, it's so bitter-sweet. I know the life they live in the wild and it's hard to see them go. So many babies are still here and some are questionable if they will reach the proper weight to release before winter.

The ones out for pre-release left behind 3 larger enclosures that others are in line to move in. So it was re-arranging day. The last big litter of 10 that are now eating on their own are growing fast. I have multiple beds, cubes and hammocks in their two story critter nation cage. This little hanging cube is about 8"x 8" square. You can't tell but all 10 are in this cube! As they grow, I hope they gain some independence! lol

This mom was attacked by a dog. She has some pretty deep puncture wounds, as well as a broken foot from a bite. She's moving very slow due to the pain. Only two of her babies survived. The second one has some scratches and hiding under her mom.

Before letting your dog out at night, please make a loud noise to scare any opossums who may be in the yard. Give them the chance to run. We'll know more once the mom settles in. I do believe X-rays will be needed this week. All are so scared right now but somehow I believe they know a kind voice and good food means life will be easier.

Remember this spicy little boy from weeks ago? He's healed really well. It's questionable if the fur will completely grow back around his eye. The shiny pink area is new skin and in a few more weeks we'll know if the fur will grow back. Often times the tissue can be too damaged for fur to grow however the great part is his vision is unharmed. He's eating great, finished with his meds but needs another 3/4 of a pound gained before we can consider a soft release.

Soft releases are when they are outdoors for 10-14 days to acclimate to the smells, sounds and temps. Then the gate is left open so he can decide to leave on his own terms. Should he become injured or not managing well in the wild, most will return to their enclosure. This is the only way I release for the best chance they will survive!
