🐾 From Pain to Recovery: Ms. Carly’s Bladder Stone Journey 💙

Meet Ms. Carly, an adorable 5-year-old Pug whose family knew something wasn’t right when she started having accidents and blood in her urine.

On August 25, she visited Dr. Lettsome and the team at CityVet Celina Crossing. X-rays, along with blood and urine testing, helped the team diagnose bladder stones, also called uroliths.

🔎 What are bladder stones?
These solid mineral deposits form in the bladder and can cause significant discomfort. Diet, urine pH, infections, and other health conditions can contribute to their formation. Common types include struvite, calcium oxalate, and urate.

🚩 Signs to watch for:

• Straining or discomfort when urinating
• Frequent urination or unexpected accidents
• Blood in the urine
• Increased licking of the ge***al area

Treatment depends on the stones’ type, size, and number. Options may include a prescription diet to dissolve certain stones, medications when appropriate, or a procedure to remove them.

Ms. Carly returned on August 26 for surgery to remove her stones. After recovering, she was back to her energetic, playful self—with no more accidents or blood in her urine! 🎉

She’s now eating a prescription urinary diet to help reduce the risk of new stones forming. Her family is thrilled to see her happy and comfortable again, and so are we!

Thank you to Ms. Carly’s family for trusting Dr. Lettsome and our team with her care. 💙

If you notice changes in your pet’s urinary habits, contact your veterinarian. If your pet is trying to urinate but cannot pass urine, seek emergency veterinary care immediately.

Whether it’s a quick trip to the park or a weekend road trip, your dog deserves the same protection you do. A few simple steps can make every ride safer:

- Use a harness, never a collar. A collar puts all the force on your dog’s neck. A well-fitted harness spreads it across the chest.
- Choose a crash-tested restraint. Look for a harness or carrier certified by the Center for Pet Safety.
- Keep your dog in the back seat. Front airbags are designed for adult humans and can seriously injure a pet.

New to car restraints? Start with short drives so your dog gets used to the gear before your next big adventure.

Which fall plants are toxic to dogs and cats?

Fall decor is fun, but some seasonal plants can make pets sick. Here are six to watch for:

- Pumpkins & gourds: Fresh, plain pumpkin is generally safe, but mold on a rotting pumpkin can be toxic.
- Oak leaves & acorns: They contain tannins that can cause vomiting and diarrhea. Acorns can also be a choking or blockage risk.
- Autumn crocus: Every part of the plant is toxic and can cause severe illness.
- Tulips: All parts are toxic, and the bulbs are the most dangerous.
- Chrysanthemums (mums): The flowers, leaves and stems can cause drooling, vomiting and skin irritation.
- Lilies: Every part of a true lily, including the pollen and vase water, can cause kidney failure in cats.

What should you do if your pet eats a toxic plant? Don’t wait for symptoms. Call us or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435 right away, and bring a photo of the plant if you can.

Can dogs eat pumpkin for Halloween? Yes!

Homemade pumpkin treats are a dog-safe alternative to Halloween candy. Just use 100% pure pumpkin with no sugar or spices, not pumpkin pie filling.
Mix 1 cup pumpkin, 2 eggs and 2½ cups oat flour. Then roll, cut and bake at 350°F for 20–30 minutes. Keep treats under 10% of your dog’s daily calories.

You’ll find the full recipe, plus soft and grain-free versions, on our blog at the link below!

How do you groom your dog at home? Start with these three essential dog grooming tips:

1️⃣ Brush before the bath. Water makes mats tighter, so work through tangles first. Use a detangling spray and a slicker brush, and go from the tips to the roots.
2️⃣ Keep bath time calm. Put down a non-slip mat, use lukewarm water and a pH-balanced dog shampoo, and have everything ready before you start. Dogs with oily coats may need a bath every month. Short-haired breeds can usually go a few months between baths.
3️⃣ Remember the finishing touches. Check nails, ears, and teeth as part of a regular routine. Floppy-eared breeds need their ears cleaned every two weeks. Teeth do best with daily brushing using enzymatic dog toothpaste.

Can you use human shampoo on dogs? No. Human products can dry out your dog's skin, so use a shampoo made for dogs.
