Dr. Lester recently treated this patient with a pyometra by surgically removing the infected uterus!
Pyometra is a serious and potentially life-threatening infection of the uterus that can occur in unspayed female dogs and cats. It most commonly develops following a heat cycle and can progress quickly to an emergency.
Vaginal discharge is a common symptom but not every pet with pyometra will have visible discharge. In a closed pyometra, the cervix remains closed and infected material becomes trapped inside the uterus.
Spaying prevents pyometra and eliminates the risk of uterine infection. ๐พ
