Today on Memorial Monday, I thought I would share the story of my beloved Cody. I adopted Cody when he was just 8 weeks old. He went EVERYWHERE with me. His favorite place was the water. He loved to swim. Cody was the absolute sweetest boy. He grew up with me. He was with me through college, moving, getting married, and being the best cuddle brother to my daughter. When his life was nearing its end, it became difficult for him to walk. On his last day, he couldn’t get up anymore. So we did the only thing we knew to do… call the vet, bring him in, say goodbye.
Poor Cody was in so much pain. He was over 100 lbs, so getting him into a car was so difficult. He was so uncomfortable. Then taking him to the vet was so heartbreaking. He was so terrified of the vet office. They gave him a sedative and he fell asleep on the cold, sterile floor. Then the final injection that stopped his heart. I signed the form, and out the door we were ushered. Leaving him there alone, not knowing where he would go or how he would be handled. A decade later, I still live with regret of how his last moments were spent… confused, scared and in pain.
He is my why. He is the reason I give every bit of my heart and compassion to making sure pet owners have the information and resources available. So that they don’t have to live with regret.
