Commenting was turned off on the post because it was turning into nothing more than an echo chamber. When that happens no positive or worthwhile conversation or discourse comes from it. Then as life goes especially in a very busy business setting life got busy.

To follow up. In the ex-client’s defense, and probably the only thing I will say in defense of his actions, I do believe he was so dead set on hearing yes to the one option he was demanding, that he did not hear or listen to any of the other options that were provided to him. He got hung up on that we require people to use our online pharmacy. That was never stated, it was offered as an option that we use because he was currently out of state. He was adamant about the Chewy situation because of this, he was out of state, could not pick up meds physically from us, or a written script, when the mention of being able to order through our online pharmacy was brought up was when that became the hyperfixation of his attack on my office manager Megan.

The entire gauntlet of manipulation was used all the way from guilt, badgering, threats. At one point she told him “you are not being very nice right now.” Trying to hopefully give him a moment to reflect on how he was acting and talking on the phone, to a human who was genuinely trying to help him. He didn’t miss a beat or a breath of air and told her “oh so now you’re going to play the victim?”

No one was trying to play the victim, we have an office policy of not using chewy for a lot of the reasons that other people pointed out in the original post as well as what we’ve seen personally. Some people want to call me a hypocrite because I do write and fill scripts through Walmart etc. the difference as a clear example, for one my old neighbor two doors down is a pharmacist at my local Walmart, they don’t bully and badger my office or staff, and they aren’t opening vet clinics and stealing clients from my colleagues in other parts of the country and offering substandard care.

On a closing note, I will defend and stand behind my staff, someone has to. I can’t imagine any other receptionist position for example that has to almost, guaranteed, on a weekly basis deal with someone being verbally abusive, rude or downright threatening. People want to know where the vets have gone? They’ve left the building or sadly in the case of many of my colleagues this physical realm. The animals haven’t changed, really honestly the challenges of medicine haven’t changed, the people who own the animals have though. It doesn’t take many people or days like that one to start questioning why we even do this? To get screamed at? Threatened? To be told we don’t care about animals, that we’re greedy, or in one really weird twist a man actually went on a whole tirade to my tech that “I must not like money!” Because I could not fit his orthopedic case dog in who already had an established veterinarian 🤯. No, I care much more about your animal getting the care it needs and still being able to help the animals of my community. The latest of the Google reviews was a call for me and my practice to be investigated by the state board…..because of my office’s policy to not use a predatory supply chain that’s already threatening the veterinary profession nation wide.

We exist in a high stress, lives depend on us everyday world. We handle all of that really well, school and training prepared us for that. What school didn’t prepare us for was having to engage and defend ourselves from psychological warfare because grown adults have the emotional regulation of toddlers but the manipulative tools to be vindictive.

This takes nothing away from the vast amount of our clients that are absolutely wonderful, respectful, and kind people, you all keep us going and continuing to want to show up everyday. You are appreciated and seen even though you don’t make a scene out of everything. We do sincerely appreciate you, your kind words, and your faith in our medical direction.

Keep the faith and fight the good fight!

I do not support Chewy. I will not support Chewy, my practice will not support Chewy. Every small practice owner would be wise to review their relationship as well.

I also do not support emotional temper tantrums from grown men.

So, without further ado here’s our most recent review, we don’t fold for attempted blackmail, so you get to read it, not only on Google but also Facebook.

To clarify a couple of talking points, we do have an online pharmacy. Which gives us the convenience to ship product directly to clients, anywhere they want them shipped. Products that are not third party sourced and who in the case of heart worm prevention means the company manufacturing them will stand by their claims of reimbursement incase of infection and cost associated with treatment.

We also work with local pharmacies to fill scripts for many of our patients, yes human pharmacies, local human pharmacies. Pharmacies that are employing people of the community, people that need jobs, have unique skill sets, call and ask questions if they see a problem or a potential problem with a prescription.

Chewy, in particular started as a wonderful idea. Convenience, low prices, everything in one place. Sound familiar? What happened when the big blue box store rolled into your local neighborhood? Your local mom and pop hardware store probably stuck it out a few more years, your locally owned grocery store sold out to a bigger chain, the paint store and local film processing place all folded. I grew up here, I literally watched it happen. But it sure saved everybody a few dollars up front for a bunch of cheap stuff that nobody stood behind when it went wrong.

Chewy is also rolling out tele-health. So now in certain states a licensed veterinarian can zoom call your animal and make decisions to direct their care including, you guessed, being able to have your pets prescriptions shipped directly from Chewy.

I can’t, nor can any privately owned practice compete with Chewy’s pricing on just about anything. However, if I just fold and say “ok we will send that to Chewy”, my practice ends up doing all of the work for Chewy, creating more work for my already overworked staff and seeing zero reward aside from not having to listen to the driveling whining of an overly entitled middle aged man.

There isn’t any grand extortion scheme. None of us are getting rich or buying yachts. This is not human medicine, nor do I ever want it to be like human medicine. With that though profit margins are slim, there isn’t insurance, state and federal funds etc to cover the gaps. I employ four of the hardest working women I personally have the pleasure of knowing and who after having to deal with days like today and people like you all deserve raises I cannot afford.

Cheers, (just not to Chewy)
Dr. Whitt

This is any given Thursday.

This is twenty patients seen; surgery patients(6), a dental, walk ins, drop offs, wellness and vaccine updates, blood work, and consultations.

But the best part of the day? It was a day to feel good about what we do!

Not only did we help twenty separate patients, answer countless calls, schedule a lot of appointments, we also celebrated the birthday of our wonderful receptionist Mary! Whom we absolutely could not function without and we are so grateful joined our team.

After we sang a very off tempo version of happy birthday with mini cupcakes and the accidentally purchased candles that wouldn’t go out…we all had a little pause of how in the beautiful chaos we ended up here and how grateful we all are that we did.

Earlier this week a client wanted to express their gratitude and asked how many people worked there? Five. The answer is five. Five human beings that work their tails off and on days like today go home knowing they’re making a difference in the world. Thank you for everyone that has shown your support and entrusted us with the care of your best friends and animals.

Also, make sure you wish Mary the happiest of 29th birthdays she’s ever had!

Let’s have an honest from the heart conversation from your veterinarian. I am, at the moment a sole practitioner, I am the only licensed DVM in my practice. I am backed by skilled nurses and technicians, but I am alone.

I want to absolutely make sure your animal is seen by a Doctor, not a technician, not a laymen. I take the time to make sure I put hands and an exam on every drop off, all emergencies, and of course every scheduled appointment.

We are currently seeing what an absolute veterinary shortage looks like in our area. This isn’t a low cost veterinary shortage, it isn’t a large animal veterinary shortage, it isn’t a small animal veterinary shortage. It is a veterinary shortage. Full stop.

I have admitted to sending surgical patients that I would absolutely love to be the surgeon on, because I know I have the skill and the passion to pursue, to Billings. The reason? Because every two hour surgery I take on emergency? Pushes potentially 8-12 booked wellness and walk in patients out, that cannot right now find care anywhere else.

I am not placing blame anywhere, I know and I empathize as I’m right in the trenches. I do not have a wonderful and magical answer. I called this in 2013 when I graduated, but I was short sighted that I thought it would only be a large animal problem. If you’re a vet student or you know one that’s going to graduate soon, send your shingle and hang it anywhere in The Bighorn Basin. We will hire you, we will mentor you, we will welcome you. (Well I will and I’m sure there are others).

It breaks my heart to run into people and to see people come into my practice that have animals dealing with horrific things, that are just waiting for their appointment date.

We are here. We are trying to help you and your animals. Please treat us with kindness and respect, we will do the best we can by you, and yes sometimes that will be that we recommend you seek immediate help because we simply can’t provide it.

We adhere to a high level of care and we will not compromise our patients because of the flood of those in need. Again we are a small team and we work as hard as we can to care for all of you. Please, if we give it, take our recommendations for transfer to another facility as the utmost respect for you and your animal.

All the best,
Dr. Whitt

We’ve had the pleasure of Jakob Dobson working alongside us since the first day launch of Paintbrush. Sadly, Friday was his last day as he has to return back to school to jump back into the books of second year vet school.

Jakob has handled all of it like a seasoned pro! He certainly has a bright future as a veterinarian and we’re honored that we got a few months to spend with him as we were in the baby steps of “building a dream”.

Good luck Jakob! Every single one of us at Paintbrush Veterinary Clinic is cheering you on and we know you’re going to make an exceptional veterinarian!

Wyoming State Fair livestock participants 📢

This is the form you will need to bring with you for your health inspection. It can be found online. Please bring this filled out as much as you can for your appointment.

We will be fitting and squeezing as many of these in as we can, please state when you call to make your appointment that you are 4-H or FFA going to the WY State Fair. There was a miscommunication today that it was a normal health certificate. If you called today and were told we couldn’t fit you in please call back.

Thank you, Dr. Whitt

The trials and tribulations of opening a new veterinary clinic…..
We would like to give a gentle reminder that our little vet clinic is very busy. Lots of phones ringing, lots of routine appointments, lots of day of emergencies. We want to help everyone that comes through our doors.
While we did inherit Bighorn Animal Care’s transaction history, we do not have detailed records. So if we are asking what seems like repetitive questions, it’s because we just don’t know.
It does take us 24 hours to refill a prescription. We keep a limited inventory and we also just don’t know who got what in the past.

All this is to say, we are doing our best. We do want to help each and every one of you that call.
We are a small group of passionate humans that want to care for your animals to the best of our ability.

Potomac horse fever.

As we work through our first suspected case of Potomac horse fever of the year here’s the quick fact sheet.

Potomac horse fever is not contagious from horse to horse nor does it pose any threat to humans.

Horses become infected with Potomac horse fever by ingesting an intermediate host. The causative bacteria(N. risticii) has been found in freshwater snails, caddisflies and mayflies.

Horses on irrigated pastures, river bottoms and other areas where the intermediate hosts reside are obviously at the highest risk of infection.

Infections generally cause lethargy, depression and loss of appetite, accompanied by high fevers(103°-107°). Watery diarrhea develops commonly, ventral edema and less commonly laminitis can be secondary complications.

Fluid therapy, IV oxytetracycline, non-steroidal anti inflammatories, and supportive care are key to helping horses recover.

Potomac horse fever can be fatal and if you have concerns your horse may be showing signs or symptoms you should immediately contact your equine veterinarian.
