Make a Difference—Volunteer at RAD!

Do you love horses and enjoy helping others? Join our team of dedicated volunteers and become part of something truly meaningful.

At RAD, horses help individuals with physical, emotional, cognitive, and developmental disabilities gain confidence, strength, independence, and joy. As a volunteer, you'll play an important role in creating life-changing experiences for our riders.

No horse experience? No problem! We provide training and support for all volunteers. Opportunities may include:

• Assisting riders during lessons
• Leading or side-walking with horses
• Grooming and caring for our equine partners
• Helping with special events and community outreach
• Supporting barn and facility activities

Volunteering is a rewarding way to connect with horses, meet wonderful people, learn new skills, and make a lasting impact in your community.

Our students are so awesome! Mary got to untack and brush Pokey off with a little music and tune at the end of the lesson. We know Pokey enjoyed it as well! At RAD, our core values revolve around the well-being and connection between our students and our horses. We are dedicated to fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment where everyone can experience the joy and benefits of therapeutic riding.

The selection process for our therapy horses is meticulous, with each equine companion being carefully chosen for our program. We consider several key factors, including their age, temperament, aptitude for the therapeutic work, capacity to remain calm in a variety of situations, and their overall mental and emotional well-being. And then, there is Goblin and Charles! These two are not only exceptional therapy horses but also bring a whole lot of laughter into our daily routines. Our horses truly are hilarious and frequently manage to make us all smile and laugh out loud throughout the day! 🤣 🤣

Thank you to the Rancho Bernardo Sunrise Rotary Club for coming out this past weekend for their Annual Day of Service! Rotary members helped put up a shade structure for one of our horses, Charles. We had 2 stalls left to complete and they helped get one done this past weekend! These shade structures are vital for the horses to help protect them against the wind, rain, sun, and elements. The panels were made possible by a grant from the Poway Community Foundation. We also attempted to set up an additional shade structure for Duke but need to come up with a different plan. Thank you all so much for your support. It really takes a village to keep RAD going and help care for the horses, students, and program. Thank you so much!

Did you know in addition to riding, RAD also offers unmounted programs? Unmounted activities include learning to work with the horses on the ground, learning about feed, round penning, leading the horses, grooming, bathing, ranch work and more.

Ground work is so important because it not only helps you set the foundation for yourself and your equine partner, it also allows you to work on training and creating a bond that is not always met in the saddle. Learning to work with the horses on the ground and all about their care helps you to become a better horse-person all around. Here is Jadyn loving her unmounted lessons with her horse Wera!

Welcome to the RAD family, Duke! This 18+ hand Percheron gelding is being leased to us by his loving owner, Mel. He's local to Poway and we're so excited to have him! Duke will be used in our military and therapy programs. He's very well-trained and spent his previous life trail riding in the mountains, rivers, and backcountry of San Diego. We're also excited to share that Duke will be partially sponsored by the Rancho Bernardo Sunrise Rotary club. We can't wait to see his journey with us and thank you for your support!

This past month we started our Stable Connections Foster Program with Steadfast Foster and Adoptive Support and we wrapped up our first 4 week session! We hosted 4 families out at the ranch to engage with and learn about horse care, bonding, feeding, grooming and more. Ages ranged from 4-18! In just 4 weeks, we noticed an overall change in the kids attending and the parents/caretakers. The overall feedback was a sense of learning, bonding with animals, feeling less anxious and an overall sense of calm and change at home.

We are so excited to partner with Sarah and Steadfast Foster and Adoptive Support to assist the community together! If you can believe it, this program already has a waitlist! If you are a foster or adoptive family please check out Steadfast and all they offer to the foster and adoptive community. This is just one aspect they are offering their clients and they have many great programs going. We look forward to working together and seeing how this program develops as we have a new session starting in June.

April was Volunteer Appreciation Month... we realize were behind the times here but with the barn dance taking up most of our planning we forgot to post!

We cannot say enough about the amazing team of people we have working with us every day. From helping with the horses, student lessons, ranch work, special events, admin work; it all means so much to us. It really does take a community to make this possible and we are so lucky to have the best crew around! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all you do!

Everyone is still buzzing from our Barn Dance fundraiser! Thanks to all of YOU, we raised 23% more in donations compared to last year – AMAZING! We couldn't do this without your support. If you missed the video that played at the event, or want to watch it again, here it is! A huge thank you to our volunteer and board member who put this together. See you next year, May 1st, 2027!
