Twenty-five years after the September 11 attacks, the dogs who worked at Ground Zero are still remembered as part of one of the largest and most difficult rescue efforts in American history.

An estimated 300 specially trained dogs served in different roles after the attacks, including search and rescue, police work, human remains detection, and therapy support. They worked alongside firefighters, police officers, medical teams, and other responders in an environment filled with unstable debris, smoke, noise, and unimaginable emotional strain.

Among them was Bretagne, a Golden Retriever with Texas Task Force 1. She arrived at Ground Zero on September 12, 2001, and worked 12-hour days for two weeks with her handler, Denise Corliss. It was Bretagne’s first FEMA deployment, and she searched tight spaces and debris piles while also becoming a source of comfort for exhausted firefighters.

Another was Trakr, a retired police German Shepherd who traveled from Nova Scotia with handler James Symington. Trakr alerted rescuers to the location of the last known survivor found beneath the rubble before later collapsing from smoke inhalation.

Riley, a four-year-old Golden Retriever with Pennsylvania Task Force 1, became part of one of the most memorable images from Ground Zero when he was transported high above the debris in a rescue basket so he could reach difficult search areas. Although trained to find survivors, Riley also helped locate fallen firefighters and provided comfort to responders.

Other dogs, including Cowboy and Sunny, spent days searching the wreckage under extraordinary conditions. Some of the live-find dogs struggled emotionally when they repeatedly searched without finding survivors. Retired NYPD detective Michael Saxe later recalled responders hiding in the debris so the dogs could successfully “find” someone and regain their motivation.

Their jobs were different, but their purpose was the same: keep searching, keep working, and stay beside the people who needed them.

A quarter-century later, the Hero Dogs of Ground Zero remain part of the story of September 11, not only for what they found, but for the comfort, courage, and determination they brought into one of America’s darkest moments.
