If you’re new here — WELCOME to the Point & Flush family. If you’ve been with us for a while — thank you for sticking with us and supporting what we do 🤎

We are Point & Flush Gun Dogs, and here’s a little about who we are:

• We are a licensed kennel nestled in Southwest Wisconsin.
• We proudly breed German Shorthairs, German Wirehairs, English Setters, Gordon Setters, American & British Labs, English Springer Spaniels, English Cocker Spaniels, PudelPointers, and Bracco Italianos.

• Our trainers specialize in obedience, gun dog development, and tracking/scent work.

• Puppy foundations — crate work, leash manners, confidence building, socialization, and early obedience
• Obedience programs — structure, manners, impulse control, and reliable communication
• Started gun dog training — bird intro, gun intro, field exposure, and early handling

Ruby – Hold Work Training in Progress 🧡🐾

Ruby is here with us for a series of focused training sessions, and one of her key goals right now is learning to hold the object until she’s told to release it. Lucas has been working closely with her on this foundational piece of any retrieving dog’s skillset. 🎯

This week’s focus has been teaching Ruby to confidently take an object, maintain a steady grip, and wait for the release cue before setting it down. From bumpers, to wooden dowels, to real birds, she’s learning that the retrieve isn’t finished until her handler says so. 🦆🧩

These reps build reliability, steadiness, and trust—qualities that carry through every stage of a gun dog’s development. Ruby is making thoughtful, consistent progress, and we’re proud of the work Lucas brings to each session. 💪🐶

🐾 Retrieving fundamentals-
Apollo and Atlas worked on foundational retrieving skills. Steady starts, clean pick-ups, and confident returns were the focus as they ran marks across open ground.🌾

🐾 Training breakdown -
Our trainers walked out to set clear marks 🎯, giving both boys consistent repetition and visual clarity. These structured setups help build accuracy, memory, and trust in the line.

🐾 Field development-
Open-field retrieves challenge dogs to judge distance, stay committed, and work through natural distractions. 🌿 Apollo and Atlas showed progress with each repetition.

🐾 Skill progression-
Today's session included single marks, controlled setups, and delivery-to-hand practice. 🦴 These reps lay the groundwork for more advanced fieldwork down the road.

Your GSP would happily keep running long after they should stop. German Shorthaired Pointers are known for their drive, endurance, and willingness to work through almost anything—including dangerous summer heat.

Knowing the signs of overheating could save your dog’s life:

🐾 Excessive panting
🐾 Excessive drooling
🐾 Weakness or stumbling
🐾 Bright red gums or tongue
🐾 Vomiting, diarrhea, or collapse

One additional sign many owners notice is “tongue bowling”—when the tongue hangs far out to the side and appears unusually large or curled. While some dogs naturally pant this way after exercise, it can also be an early warning that your GSP is struggling to cool itself.

If you notice these signs:
✅ Stop activity immediately
✅ Move to shade or air conditioning
✅ Offer cool water
✅ Wet paws, belly, and neck with cool water
✅ Contact your veterinarian if symptoms are severe

Remember: Our GSPs don’t always know when to quit. It’s our job to keep them safe.
