We grow up learning what love sounds like in cats and dogs, but the truth is that all animals have their own ways of expressing comfort, trust, and affection—like how Coco is greeting Victoria here.

This adorable open-mouth greeting, sometimes called a “piggy puff,” is an affectionate vocalization where pigs blow warm air while softly grunting. It’s often compared to a cat’s purr and is something they use with the humans and fellow pigs they trust most. ❤️

One of the greatest gifts of sanctuary is getting to witness moments like these and learning to recognize them for what they are. The language may be a little different, but the feeling behind it is remarkably familiar.

Watch until the end to meet the self-appointed mayor of the piggy patch 😍🐽

When people hear Dani or Sunshine’s story, they usually focus on the leap. Two piglets jumping from different transport trucks onto the highway feels extraordinary.

But watching them now, years later, what’s striking is how beautifully, perfectly ordinary they are. Just like the animals we love as companions.

They love sunny afternoons and good snacks. They have friendships, preferences, routines, and opinions. They seek comfort when they’re scared and joy when they’re safe. They enjoy learning and greet us when we call their names. They wake up each morning wanting exactly what any of us want: another day, another meal, another chance to experience the things they enjoy. And love…always lots of love. 💗

The leap wasn’t extraordinary because it changed who they were. It was extraordinary because it revealed who they had been all along.

Choosing plant-based options makes a difference for all the Danis and Sunshines out there. We’re here to help if you need it! 🌱🫶

A question. Warm skin but wiry hair that feels cool. A pig named Coco who absolutely loves love and attention.

We don’t have to lecture kids about compassion because at Rosie’s they’re finding it themselves with every connection. This truly is incredible work, and it’s making a difference 💞

Did you know chickens read emotions the same way dogs and cats do?

Judy is not a snuggly lap chicken, not even with Joddie, our vet tech, who she knows and loves. But last night Joddie came in grieving the loss of her sweet 21 (!) year-old cat, Rosie, and for the first time ever, Judy climbed out of her foot soak and up into Joddie’s lap.

Chickens pick up on micro-expressions, body language, and the tone of your voice. They notice the sadness you’re trying to hold together. Research shows they experience genuine emotional empathy—when someone they trust is hurting, they feel it too.

Joddie has shown up for every animal here. Last night, Judy showed up for her. 💜
