🌿 Coat Care Tips: Why Matting Can Worse in Summer 🌿

As the weather warms up, there is a rise in matting — even in dogs who are usually very low‑maintenance. Summer brings a few sneaky factors that make tangles form faster and tighter.

Here’s why:

✨ More outdoor adventures
Grass seeds, sticky buds, pollen and debris cling to coats, especially armpits, legs and tummies. These tiny bits twist into the coat and begin the matting process.

✨ Swimming and Sprinklers
Water + friction = tangles. When coats dry naturally after swimming, they tighten and knot up extremely fast. If these aren't brushed out appropriately and the process happens over again with wet mats, it's a quick recipe for a pelted coat.

✨ Sweat, humidity & heat
Dogs don’t sweat like we do, but heat and humidity still affect their coat. Moisture in the air causes curls and waves to tighten, trapping loose hairs and forming mats.

✨ Seasonal coat changes
Many breeds shed heavily in summer. When dead undercoat isn’t brushed out, it compacts underneath the topcoat and mats from the inside out. This is why I highly encourage regular deshed grooming appointments or even a deshed blow out. Keep that undercoat to a minimum.

✨ Harnesses & collars
More walks and adventures mean more rubbing. Friction areas (behind the ears, chest, armpits) mat faster in warmer months. I always recommend brushing out your furry friends after removing those harnesses.

🌼 How to help at home
• Regular brushing (little and often is best)
• Thorough brushing after swimming or rain
• Keeping friction areas tidy (Armpits, rear, neck, b***y, stomach and legs)
• Booking grooms a little closer together during summer.

A well‑maintained coat keeps your dog cooler, more comfortable and far happier during the warmer months.

⚠️ Tick Tip Thursday ⤵️

Let's talk about those creepy crawly little bugs, TICKS!! 🕷 Unfortunately, the tick season is already in full swing due to our mild winter. 😕

Like humans, pets can contract tickborne diseases. ☣️
Pets can also bring ticks into your home which will pose as exposure to other pets and family members. 🆘️

Here are some Tips to help keep you and your pets educated and prepared to be safe this summer. ☀️

💥 Daily Tick Checks are vitally important 💥 Thoroughly check your dog after they spend time outdoors. Focus on areas where ticks hide (ie: between toes, under legs, in ears, under the collar, and around the tail).

👉Environmental Control: Keep grass mowed short, remove leaf litter, and avoid walking in tall grass or heavily wooded areas.

✨️ Regular Grooming: Regular bathing and grooming helps keep your pet clean and aids in early detection of ticks.

➡️Do not mix preventive tick/flea products:⬅️ Do not use a collar and a topical spray simultaneously without veterinary advice/guidance, as this can lead to over-exposure and possibly other hazardous medical consequences. Seek veterinary medical advice before administration of any treatments.

⛔️Never use dog products on cats: Many canine tick preventatives, especially those containing permethrin, are toxic to cats.

❌️Tick Removal: Use tweezers to grab the tick close to the skin and pull upward with steady pressure. Be sure to remove the tick as a whole (head included!). Be sure to properly dispose of your unwanted guest to prevent further spreading or reproducing.

🧐 Watch your pet closely for changes in behavior or appetite if you know or suspect that it has been bitten by a tick. Be sure to consult with your licensed veterinary professional immediately!

With the weather warming up. Let's discuss a misconception of ‘Double-coated breeds should be shaved in summer to keep them cool'. 🙅‍♀️ 👎

💥 WRONG 💥
Here’s the truth: Their guard hair and undercoat actually REGULATES temperature! 🌡 Shaving destroys this natural cooling system and can cause permanent coat damage. Shaving double-coated dogs (such as Huskies, Aussies, Samoyed, Pomeranian, Malamute etc) is NOT advised. Shaving a double coated dog can ruin their natural insulation, making them hotter, and can cause permanent coat damage, patchiness, and severe skin issues like sunburn. Instead, focus on regular grooming to remove the dead undercoat. 🔥

What you can do to help instead:
✅️ Schedule regular grooming appointments
✅ Regular de-shedding treatments
✅ Proper brushing technique between grooms
✅ Coat conditioning to prevent matting
✅️ Extra large sanitary or belly strip to help aid in cooling.

Your dogs well-being is top priority and as much as we think taking hair off is helping them. It's actually causing more harm. Their double coats are there for a reason. Proper and correct coat maintenance will help your dog (&you!) In the long run. 💪
