Halloween is right around the corner! It may be spooky time, but it should be fun for our pets too!

With costumes, decorations, candy and extra activity around the house, taking a few simple precautions can help keep your pets safe and comfortable this Halloween:

👻 Costumes: make sure costumes fit comfortably and do not restrict breathing, movement or vision.

🕯️ Decor: keep candles, cords, small decorations and anything chewable out of reach.

🍬 Candy: keep chocolate and sugar-free candy hidden and away from your pets. Some ingredients can be dangerous if ingested.

🫀 How does my veterinarian obtain a blood pressure measurement on my pet?

A question we often get, how can we obtain a blood pressure reading on your awake pet patient?
There are a few ways to obtain a blood pressure reading on your pet. One very common method we use is with a Doppler.
Obtaining a blood pressure reading on your pet using a Doppler is done by placing an appropriately-sized cuff—fun fact: we often use human pediatric cuffs—on one of your pet's limbs, and place a small amount of ultrasound gel on a small crystal probe. We then place the probe on the skin over your pet's artery, below where the cuff has been secured, so that we can detect the sound of your pet's pulse. Once we detect the pulse, we occlude the artery by inflating the previously-secured cuff, just like they would in humans, and slowly deflate the cuff to obtain your pet's blood pressure reading.

Meet 6-year-old Buddy. Buddy has no eyes. (Update: Adopted! ♥️)

It's the first thing you'll likely notice about him, so let's start there. Years ago, an eye infection became so severe that his vet recommended removing his eyes. Buddy has had a long time to adjust, and he's gotten pretty good at it. He works out a new space quickly and gets around better than you'd expect. His favorite spot is a shelf on top of his cat tree.

We'll be honest: shelter life has been a lot for him. With all the strange sounds and the constant bustle, Buddy has been mostly withdrawn and nervous here. That makes sense for a cat who only knows the world through sound and touch. Once he learns your voice and your hands, though, a very sweet boy comes through. He loves affection and gentle pets, and he'd rather you come to him than be scooped up. Sit beside him and start talking, then he'll take it from there.

A calm, quiet home
Another easygoing cat could work, since he's coexisted with cats before
Dog history: unknown

Thinking about adopting a blind cat? A few tips to help them feel safe:
1. Start small. Set up one quiet room with food, water, a bed, and a litter box. Open up the rest of your home a little at a time as they gain confidence.
2. Keep things in place. Blind cats memorize their surroundings, so try not to move furniture, bowls, or the litter box, and keep floors clear of clutter.
3. Use your voice. Speak softly when you enter a room or reach out to pet them, so your touch never comes as a surprise.
4. Let them walk. Being carried can be disorienting. If you do pick them up, set them down somewhere familiar, like near their food bowl.

As temperatures cool and routines change, fall brings a few seasonal hazards for pets to keep in mind:

🍂 Keep pets away from mushrooms and other unknown plants they may find outdoors.

🎃 Keep pumpkins, decorations, and seasonal treats out of reach. Some foods and decorations can be dangerous if ingested.

🕷️ Continue flea, tick and heartworm prevention. Parasites remain active in many areas even as the temperatures drop.

🌡️ Watch the weather. Cooler temperatures can be uncomfortable or dangerous, especially for small, senior, or short-coated pets.
