The Portland Vet team had such a great day connecting with local pet lovers, handing out goodies, and serving plenty of pup cups to our four-legged visitors. Thank you to everyone who came by to meet us and join in the fun! 🧡

Starting September 8, Dr. Little will be seeing patients and getting to know the pets and families of our community. She's passionate about building lasting relationships with pets and the people who love them and brings experience caring for both small animals and exotic pets.

We asked our team: "What's one thing you wish more dog owners knew about swimming?"

Their answer: Just because your dog is in the water doesn't mean they're safe from overheating. 🌊☀️

Dogs can still develop heat-related illness during beach, lake, and pool days, even while swimming.

Watch for:
🐾 Heavy panting
🐾 Excessive drooling
🐾 Reluctance to keep playing

When in doubt, take a break in the shade and give your pup time to cool down. 🧡

Summer walking tip: the pavement doesn't care that it's "only" 77° outside.

Before heading out for a walk, place the back of your hand on the pavement and hold it there for 7 seconds. If it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for your dog's paws.

A quick check can help prevent painful paw pad burns.

Want to know if your pet is dehydrated? Try this. 💧

Gently pinch the skin at the back of their neck, then let go. It should spring back immediately. If it stays tented, your pet may need water and a vet visit.

Other signs to watch for 🐾
-Dry or tacky gums
-Sunken eyes
-Lethargy or confusion
-Not urinating

Asphalt and concrete absorb heat and can reach extremely high temperatures on hot summer days.

Protect your dog's sensitive paws with the 5-second check: place the back of your hand on the pavement for 5 seconds. If it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for your dog. 🐾🔥
