Here is a side by side example of two dogs who are learning two different things at two different levels
Goose has been in ds a multiple days a week for months, has done a short board and train, and has done a class or two
Oakley is brand new ! This is her second time in day school.
Oakley is working on her foundational obedience, just getting the hang of things. Goose is working on proofing his obedience, we are making it harder; asking for him to do it longer with higher distraction.

If your pup is more like Oakley, just learning, join us in our basic obedience class!

Part of a session with Trajan at the shop.

A small group of us met this morning to work our dogs and sport each other. I want to start by saying how important it is to have spotters and coaches. They can see things from the outside that you simply cannot see while you’re handling your dog. Good coaching can help you become a better handler and, ultimately, get better results from your training.

That said, watching my puppy today showed me something I need to work on.

My handling tends to focus on building drive for the treat rather than teaching my dog to slow down, think, and be more thoughtful about the exercise. When I was coached to slow down, reward the small achievements—like simply getting the puppy’s front feet calmly onto the cinder block—and then let the puppy develop from there, I got the calm “dot” on the cinder block that I was looking for.

I tend to be pretty comfortable building drive and developing relationships with dogs. That’s one piece of the puzzle.

The other piece is knowing when to slow down, give the dog some space, and let them think and solve problems on their own.

Both are necessary to develop a well-rounded dog.

Sometimes the biggest improvement in your training comes from someone standing on the outside of the picture and showing you what you can’t see from the end of the leash.

The number one goal of my session with Hannah was to stay connected, I stay decently active while remaining calm to avoid amping Hannah up more. She has a lot of energy and sometimes it overflows into anxiety so we try not to add to this
My second goal is getting Hannah’s obedience flowing easier, I’m not adding pressure, I am only using my voice and lure, helping her when she doesn’t follow through, not correcting

A quick morning sessions in between drop offs. So what did we work on?
Coming out of the pen calmly, yielding to the leash pressure, engagement and a little bit of luring games and obedience when miss oakley did engage, then going back into the pen without a fuss while I grab another friend being dropped off. Once all our friends are here we will work on our social skills in group!
