We were going to share a win today, but our amazing rescue partner Lily's Pad Rescue did it for us!

Look at that face! Those eyes! That tiny tongue working overtime! 😂💕 Carmel knows that a little cheese can make even a trip to the vet a little more bearable. But behind this adorable moment is something incredibly important to the care of our medically needy rescue dogs: FEAR FREE VETERINARY CARE. 🩺🐾
At Lily’s Pad Rescue, many of our bulldogs have complex medical needs, special challenges, and sometimes a history that makes veterinary visits stressful. For these precious babies, how they receive care matters just as much as the care itself.
💚 Fear Free care is about more than treats and cheese! It’s about reducing fear, anxiety, and stress; recognizing each dog’s individual needs; using gentle handling; allowing breaks when needed; and creating a veterinary experience where our dogs feel as safe and comfortable as possible.
When a dog feels safer, veterinary teams can often perform examinations and treatments more effectively, and our pups have a better chance of building positive associations with the people who help them heal.
For medically fragile and special-needs dogs, minimizing stress is especially important. Their medical conditions may make handling and examinations more complicated, so having a team that understands their needs and adjusts its approach can make a tremendous difference. Matzah brought his sister's ESM (Emotional Support Monkey) from home for his recent neuter and dewclaw removal. Who doesn't want to wake up from anesthesia with something from home??🐶❤️

Our entire team is committed to protecting each patient's emotional, mental, and physical well-being...which means surgery day doesn't have to be scary!👏👏👏

Keeping pets' stress level low prior to anesthesia = No big adrenaline rush = less medication needed = SAFER ANESTHESIA!

How can you help make your pet's surgery day as low-stress as possible?
☑️Give the pre-op medications as prescribed on an empty stomach.
☑️Bring something from home they find comforting (toys and blankets are welcome!).
☑️Drive calmly with soothing music on the way, giving yourself plenty of time to arrive safely.
☑️Some pets benefit from having their owners with them during the initial sedation. Let us know if this is something you'd like to do!
☑️If pre-op diagnostics are completed and your pet may get stressed in their kennel, we can arrange a later admit time if this works for your schedule.

Olive and Benny were in to establish care recently. The Cat-Only exam room, calming pheromones, and quiet music helped them nap right through their appointment!

Did you know we save 2 to 3 urgent care appointments every weekday for our established clients? We want to save you the wait at the ER too!🩺

Where are our Dane people at? Viking Veterinary Care has now partnered with Goodest , a Great Dane rescue in California looking to expand their fosters and adopters in the Portland area.

Dr. Rosie has spoken directly with the founder, and loves how this rescue is run! It’s foster-based, so they KNOW the dog and can tell you more about how they do in a home environment. All dogs adopted out are spayed/neutered and gastropexied. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
