For some pets, a trip to the vet can be incredibly stressful.
When an animal has a negative experience, that fear can carry over to the next visit, often times making each appointment even harder than the last.
That's why we may recommend pre-visit medications as part of a low-stress approach to veterinary care.
This is a good thing for your pet! These medications (typically Gabapentin or Trazodone) are given prior to their appointment to reduce fear and anxiety. They can help take the edge off so your pet is better equipped to cope with the experience.
Our goal isn't simply to get through the appointment, or to "knock your pet out." The goal is to help make your pet feel more at ease and remain calm enough to allow a thorough exam.
Just like we use other tools to prevent pain or illness, anxiety medications can be one tool we use to build a better, low-stress foundation for future veterinary visits.
