Successful cat/dog integration relies heavily on the initial environmental set up, which means creating safe spaces as first priority! Cats always need their escape routes like elevated surfaces and hiding spots the dog can’t access to feel safe in the home. Plus, they need to be able to eliminate in peace! Keeping the litter box in a room where your dog cannot access will prevent any litter box avoidance by making sure your dog doesn’t create a habit of checking the litter box for dessert 💩.

Remember that every unique pairing of two roommates of different species who didn’t ask to live together will require its own individual timeline. That’s why having a professional guide you through the integration process is imperative. They can help you set realistic goals, adjust the plan in real time, and most of all, make sure you don’t rush the process, as tempting as it is! 🐕🤝🐈‍⬛

Ps - These tips are more geared towards bringing a new cat home with an already established resident dog, but most of the same rules apply. If a new dog is brought into a home with an existing cat, I would allow the cat more free rein and give the dog a decompression space where the cat cannot access.
