A gentle reminder for our Heavenly Siberians families bringing kittens home soon (and helpful for anyone in the future too):
When your kitten first comes home, they may not be the bouncy, affectionate kitten you’re expecting at first. That is completely normal. Going from the only environment they have ever known to a brand new house, with new sounds, new smells, and new people, is a big change for a little one.
Most cats follow what is known as the 3-3-3 rule:
3 days to decompress. Your kitten may hide, eat less, and seem unsure. Give them a small, quiet room with their food, water, litter box, and a few familiar items. Let them come to you.
3 weeks to settle in. They begin learning your routine, exploring more, and showing their real personality.
3 months to feel truly at home. By this point your kitten knows they are safe, knows they are loved, and fully trusts their new family.
The wonderful news is that most of our Siberians bounce back much faster than this. Many are purring in laps within a day or two. But every kitten is different, and being patient with the adjustment period sets them up for a lifetime of trust and confidence in your home.
If your kitten is hiding, not eating much that first day, or seems shy, please do not panic. It is completely normal. Give them time, speak softly, and let them come to you. The sweet kitten you fell in love with is still in there. They just need a moment to feel safe in their new world.
