Daisy is 3 years old, 48 pounds, and full of personality. This fun sized girl has become a total favorite with our staff and volunteers, and it’s easy to see why. She’s silly, spunky, loves her people, and has never once turned down a snack offered by her many admirers here at the shelter. Daisy is currently enjoying her “a little extra fluffy” era and fully supports being spoiled.

We learned she’s almost half Chow Chow, which explains her loyal and devoted personality. Daisy is the kind of dog who picks her people carefully, but once she loves you, she’s your biggest fan forever.

After spending so much time at the shelter, Daisy has definitely earned the right to be a little picky. She would do best as the only dog in an adult only home where she can soak up all the love, attention, treats, and couch space for herself.

She loves attention, adventures, and hanging out with her favorite humans. Daisy has so much love, joy, and personality packed into her adorable chunky little self, and we know there’s a home out there that’s going to absolutely adore her.

Come meet Daisy and see why everyone here is obsessed with her.

Some dogs truly blossom once they leave the shelter, and Sherri-Moon is the perfect example of that.

Her amazing foster family made the drive from Brooklyn multiple times to help her decompress, settle in, and learn how to just be a dog again. Outside of the shelter environment, Sherri has shown everyone how sweet, loving, and special she really is.

She’s come so far, but Sherri-Moon is still looking for her forever home. As much as she loves her shelter friends and foster family, she deserves a family of her very own.

Watching her thrive has been so special, now we just need the perfect home to see how wonderful she truly is.

Six hundred and thirty four days- that is how long Obi, our 3 year old hound mix, has been waiting for his family to come along since arriving at the shelter as a stray in 2024. If you’re wondering why no one has scooped him up in over 600 days, your guess is as good as ours, because he checks every box: Handsome? Obviously. Friendly? With everyone! Likes other dogs? Yep. Smart? He knows all his tricks. Treat motivated? Extremely. Fun? Absolutely!

Obi has a bubbly personality and an infectious energy- he’s the kind of dog that turns every outing into an adventure! He is a true Heinz 57 In terms of breeds (according to his DNA, 14 in total!), with smatterings of Treeing Walker Coonhound, Samoyed, Catahoula, Beagle, and Labrador Retriever. All we know is that he is 100% Good Boy!

Despite being at the shelter for all this time, he has maintained his goofy personality, always finding ways to make us laugh. Obi should be living the good life by now, instead he has spent 634 days watching other dogs from his kennel find their families while he waits for his turn. Obi is ready for his people. We just need someone to give this amazing dog the chance he deserves.

For more information on Obi and our adoption process, please call the shelter at 516-869-6311.

Today is National Rescue Dog Day, a day dedicated to the millions of shelter dogs still waiting for a second chance. Here at the Town of North Hempstead Animal Shelter, we’re lucky to know so many incredible dogs who are ready to bring love, laughter, and companionship into a home of their own.

From playful adventures to quiet cuddle sessions, rescue dogs have a way of changing lives for the better. This National Rescue Dog Day, we’re celebrating some of our adoptable stars: Otto, Trout, Eloise, Sherri Moon, and the many other amazing dogs still waiting for their forever families.

You can make a difference by adopting, fostering, volunteering, or simply sharing our dogs with friends and family. Every rescue dog deserves the chance to be someone’s best friend. Could your home be the one they’ve been waiting for?

This Mother’s Day, we’re celebrating Rain.

She came to the shelter with her three puppies…already big, growing dogs. Now that her job is done, Rain is ready for something she’s never had, a home where she can be the one cared for.

Rain is looking for a family of her own, where she can finally relax and enjoy life beyond motherhood.

One of her puppies, Logan, is also available for adoption, but Rain is ready to enjoy her next chapter on her own.

If you’re looking for a loyal companion, come meet Rain.

***Seeking Foster or Adopter***

We are reaching out to our ever-supporting community to help one of our amazing dogs in need. Venus, a beautiful gray-nose 4 year old, 60 lb. pibble mix, has been with us for a year waiting for her chance. Sadly, shelter life has been weighing on her- the noise, the constant activity, and lack of a consistent place to truly relax can be tough for any dog, but Venus is struggling. We moved her into a private room with the hope of giving her some peace, and while this has helped her some, the truth is, it’s still not a home. We are seeking either a long-term foster, foster-to-adopt, or adopter to rescue her from shelter life and provide the tranquility she deserves.

Venus is truly a wonderful dog- she is affectionate, playful, and full of life when she gets the chance to be herself. She loves to be out and about, greeting new people and exploring the world. She is dog friendly, and even seems to do well with cats! She is the perfect mix of fun and companionship. She isn’t seeking perfection- just a person, a couch, a yard, and somewhere she can finally exhale. If you have ever considered fostering or are debating adding a dog to your family, Venus is right here. She doesn’t know how much time has passed, just that she is still hoping. Please come meet her, or if you can’t take on a dog right now, share her story.
Please call us at 516-869-6311 if you are considering opening your home to Venus.
