Today we celebrate the most perfect animal on the planet!

Every August 8, the world celebrates International Cat Day, created in 2002 by the International Fund for Animal Welfare to celebrate cats while raising awareness about their welfare, protection, and care.

Cats have lived beside us for thousands of years, yet they have never completely lost their air of mystery. Independent, observant, affectionate, and sometimes wonderfully strange, they have also become inseparable from folklore, superstition, witches, and gothic imagination.

And few writers understood their mysterious charm better than Edgar Allan Poe. Poe adored cats and shared his home with Catterina, his beloved tortoiseshell cat. Accounts say she would sit on his shoulder while he wrote, quietly keeping him company as the pages filled with some of literature’s darkest visions.

I agree!

Cats have retractable claws that stay sharp without maintenance, antibacterial saliva that keeps them clean, night vision that operates in near-total darkness, and a righting reflex that activates within milliseconds of a fall. Their purr frequency has been shown to stimulate bone repair and reduce cortisol levels in nearby humans.

Biologists studying feline anatomy have called them one of the most complete biological designs in existence.

Do you think they deserve the title?

For 23 days, no one knew if the little cat trapped beneath the rubble in La Guaira, Venezuela, was still alive. 💔🐱

After a powerful earthquake caused buildings to collapse, the cat disappeared beneath the debris. As the days passed, hope began to fade. Then, rescuers heard something they never expected... a faint meow coming from deep below the rubble.

Firefighters carefully searched the area and, against all odds, pulled the cat out alive. Though weak and dehydrated after more than three weeks trapped, the resilient survivor had never given up. 🥹🐾

The cat is now receiving veterinary care and continuing to recover. Its incredible survival is a testament to the determination of rescue teams who refused to stop searching and a reminder that hope can endure even in the most devastating circumstances. ❤️
