Mutt-i-grees Curriculum

Mutt-i-grees Curriculum An innovative PreK-12 SEL curriculum that highlights the unique characteristics of shelter pets to teach essential skills for academic & life success

The Mutt-i-grees® Curriculum teaches social and emotional skills and is unique in its bridging of humane education and the emerging field of Social and Emotional Learning (SEL). In a series of easily implemented lessons, children learn critical skills that will help them in school, at home, and later on in the workplace and in their interactions with people and, of course, with animals. Integrated

throughout the Curriculum are feature lessons on dog behavior developed with Cesar Millan. Social and Emotional Learning is the process by which children acquire social and emotional skills. It is based on emotional intelligence studies which have shown that emotionally intelligent individuals are successful because they are able to understand and control their emotions, empathize, communicate and collaborate effectively as well as make sound and ethical decisions; they are able to accomplish tasks because they let go of emotions and issues that stand in the way of learning. Although regarded as essential for school success, social and emotional skills are also what makes us understanding and compassionate toward others - people and animals. These skills can be taught, just as we teach reading and writing, in a series of lessons. Lesson plans in the Mutt-i-grees® Curriculum are presented within five themes, each one reflecting a key principle in Social and Emotional Learning: self-awareness, understanding feelings, empathy, cooperation, and decision-making. The Mutt-i-grees Curriculum was developed by The Pet Savers Foundation, in collaboration with the Yale University School of the 21st Century, and was graciously funded by The Cesar Millan Foundation.

Unleash a Summer of Reading at North Shore Animal League America!

Beginning July 7, students in Kindergarten through Grade 12 are invited to complete their summer reading while spending time with our rescue dogs and cats.

Reading to animals creates a unique, mutually beneficial experience. It helps our dogs and cats become more comfortable around people in a calm, quiet environment, while giving readers the opportunity to build confidence, improve literacy skills, and practice reading aloud without judgment or pressure.

Sessions take place on Tuesdays from 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM, from July 7 through August 25, at 25 Davis Ave, Port Washington, NY.

While not required, donations of supplies or funds are encouraged to help support the animals in our care.

Space is limited and registration is required—reserve your spot today: https://education.muttigrees.org/2026-summer-reading-signup/

Step by step, they walked with purpose—and heart. 🐾💙
Our Mutt-i-grees Global Ambassadors from Nelson Place Elementary School took part in a community Kindness Walk, shining a special spotlight on compassion for animals. As part of their Mutt-i-grees Global Ambassador initiatives, they proudly wore t-shirts filled with their own handwritten kindness quotes, reminding everyone that even the smallest act of care can make a big difference.
From wagging tails to warm hearts, these young changemakers are spreading empathy one step at a time.

This week, we welcomed the amazing seniors from John L. Miller - Great Neck North High School for their annual “Seniors Serve” Day!

As part of their grade-wide community service initiative, these students spent the day at North Shore Animal League America learning about our life-saving mission, supporting our mobile adoption units, and sharing plenty of love with our adoptable animals. 💙

From volunteering alongside our team to making meaningful connections with rescue animals, this group truly embodied the spirit of service and compassion. We’re grateful for the positive impact they made in just one day! 🐶🐱

It’s National Rescue Dog Day… and this is what lifesaving looks like. 💙

Today, 30 dogs and puppies arrived at our Port Washington, NY campus from our incredible shelter partners at A Love for Animals Rescue - ALFA after facing overcrowded conditions and an uncertain future.

Now, everything changes.

These deserving dogs are getting the care every animal deserves - medical treatment, vaccinations, nourishing meals, warm beds, compassionate care, and the chance to experience love, safety, and hope for the very first time. ✨

Rescue is never a one-person effort. It takes dedicated shelter partners, transport teams, staff, volunteers, fosters, adopters, and supporters all coming together to give animals a second chance at life.

And while we celebrate these 30 dogs being safe today, there are still countless more waiting for help.

Your support makes rescues like this possible. Every donation helps us continue our no-kill mission and say “yes” when vulnerable animals need us most. 💙

Happening TOMORROW — May 20, 2026!

In honor of National Rescue Dog Day, Shake Shack is giving back in a big way: for every hot dog sold nationwide on May 20, $1 will be donated to Tails That Teach—helping put books about kindness, empathy, and responsible pet care into the hands of children across the country. Every bite helps fuel humane education—supporting classrooms, shelters, camps, and community programs with free, meaningful resources that inspire children to care for animals safely and compassionately.

How you can help:
• Grab a hot dog at Shake Shack on May 20
• Spread the word with your friends, family, and community
• Share this post to help amplify the impact
Together, we can turn one small action into lasting change for kids and animals alike. 🐶❤️

We were thrilled to welcome our local photography students from Paul D. Schreiber High School in Port Washington Union Free School District to North Shore Animal League America's campus this week. Students learned about our lifesaving mission, explored how we care for our animals, and put their skills to work capturing the unique personalities of their furry subjects. By photographing our adoptable animals, these students are helping shine a light on animals waiting for their forever homes. 🐶📷🐱
