This beautiful girl is the sweetest! Her humans were having some concerns about her greeting people and about pulling on her walks. Of course, we discussed Molly’s Total Welfare and how her humans can help meet her needs. And the Off Duty and Get a Grip hacks will be implemented to help Molly learn how to regulate her emotions when new people are around her both in her home and outside. Understanding that these behaviors are part of being a Bernese Mountain Dog, will help her humans as well.

Bowie was a little tired when I arrived, so we worked on something that required resting in place…sit maintain. Then he perked up, so we had some fun trading toys and learning “drop it”. I always work with what the dog gives me. Requesting a dog to stay still when they are in a playful mood, will be more challenging than necessary. So, work with the dog in front of you and you’ll be setting up your dog for success.

Yogi’s sister, Candy, came over for a play date followed by a visit to the local Preserve. The beauty of older dog teaching younger dog can not be overstated. Yogi learned more from Candy in one hour than he could learn from any human. She even got Yogi to go into the water! Watching dog communication is vital, growling is often interrupted by humans fearing an impending fight. But more often than not, it’s a necessary correction that teaches the younger dog what is and is not permissible. It’s important to learn what your dog is communicating and when to intervene.

Bowie is a puppy sheepadoodle who is in the full blown bitey stage. How do we get puppies to stop making pin cushions out of their humans? Lots of teething toys, the Karl Hack (see previous videos for that), and puppy play dates. Will it stop the biteys altogether? Probably not, but it will definitely help decrease the frequency and intensity.

In these few minutes, Yogi is engaging in at least 4 behaviors that will benefit his welfare. He’s sniffing, digging, rooting(sticking his nose in a tight area) and stomping. There’s probably a few more that I missed…see if you can name some.

One of the easiest and most fun ways to meet your dog’s welfare needs, is to feed them in ways that allow them to use their instincts. Here, Yogi is using a snuffle mat. I put his food under the felt pieces and in the pockets. He digs, forages, smells, scratches and uses all of his senses to get his breakfast. So satisfying and fun for him. Have you met your dog’s Welfare needs today?

Like many toy breeds, Lucky is having trouble with house training. Setting up a consistent routine, keeping track of her eating and drinking schedule and lots of patience will hopefully help Lucky…and her humans.
