🐱💙 KNOW THE DISEASE: Feline Panleukopenia 💙🐱

It may be a big word, but panleukopenia is a disease every cat parent should know about especially those with kittens.

Sometimes called the “parvo of cats,” feline panleukopenia is a highly contagious and potentially life-threatening viral disease. Young, unvaccinated kittens are especially vulnerable. 🐾

⚠️ Signs to watch for can include:

🐱 Vomiting
🐱 Diarrhea
🐱 Fever
🐱 Loss of appetite
🐱 Dehydration
🐱 Extreme tiredness or weakness

One of the reasons panleukopenia is so concerning is how tough the virus can be in the environment. It can persist on contaminated surfaces for an extended period of time, meaning infection can spread even without direct cat-to-cat contact.

But here’s the important part: Panleukopenia is preventable. 💉💙

The FVRCP vaccine helps protect against feline panleukopenia as well as other serious feline diseases. Starting vaccinations at the appropriate age and completing your kitten’s recommended vaccine series helps give their developing immune system the protection it needs.

🐱💙 KNOW THE DISEASE: Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) 💙🐱

Curious cats love to explore but sometimes those adventures can expose them to more than we realize. 🐾

Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) is a contagious virus that can weaken a cat’s immune system, making it harder for their body to fight infections and increasing their risk of other serious health problems.

FeLV can spread between cats through close contact, including mutual grooming, shared food or water bowls, and bite wounds. Cats who spend time outdoors or interact with cats of unknown FeLV status may have a greater risk of exposure.

🧪 TESTING: A simple blood test can help determine your cat’s FeLV status. Knowing their status is an important part of protecting both your cat and other cats they may encounter.

🐾💙 Know the Disease: Kennel Cough 💙🐾

When people hear “kennel cough,” they often assume dogs can only catch it at a boarding facility, but that’s not always the case!

Kennel cough is a highly contagious respiratory illness that can spread anywhere dogs interact with one another, including:

🐶 Dog parks
✂️ Grooming salons
🏡 Boarding facilities
🎓 Training classes
🐾 Doggy daycare
🚶 Even neighborhood walks

Much like respiratory infections in people, kennel cough can spread through coughing, sneezing, close contact, and contaminated items such as shared water bowls and toys.

⚠️ Signs to watch for may include:
• A dry, hacking cough
• Sneezing
• Runny nose
• Low energy
• Decreased appetite

While many otherwise healthy dogs recover without complications, puppies, senior dogs, and dogs with underlying health concerns may be at greater risk for more serious illness.

The Bordetella vaccine can help reduce your dog’s risk of illness and may help lessen the severity of symptoms if exposure occurs.

Canine distemper is a highly contagious viral disease that can affect a dog’s respiratory, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems. While routine vaccination has made distemper much less common, it can still occur—especially in unvaccinated puppies and dogs—and the consequences can be devastating.

⚠️ Signs of canine distemper may include:
🤒 Fever
👃 Nasal and eye discharge
😷 Coughing
🤢 Vomiting or diarrhea
🧠 Tremors, seizures, or other neurologic signs

Dogs that survive distemper may be left with long-term neurological problems, which is why prevention is so important.

Parvovirus, often called “Parvo,” is one of the most serious viral diseases affecting puppies and unvaccinated dogs. While it can be life-threatening, the good news is that it’s highly preventable through vaccination.

Parvo attacks the intestinal tract and immune system, causing severe illness that requires immediate veterinary care.
