How a lighting design actually gets made:

We walk the property at night. Not during the day — at night, when we can see what's actually dark and what the neighbors' lights are already doing.

Then we look at what's worth lighting. Not everything is. A good design picks three or four features and lets the rest fall back into shadow. Contrast is what makes it look intentional instead of floodlit.
