Meet Clock!

We were introduced to Clock after he was attacked by 3 large dogs. He had several severe puncture wounds on his back, leg and both sides. Unfortunately the severity of those wounds on his sides progressed and we had to debride decaying tissue to allow Clock to heal. This meant Clock had several large open wounds on both sides of his body. His awesome family opted to add in Class IV laser therapy. For the next 3 1/2 weeks, we were frequently graced with Clock's happy presence, tail always wagging and ready to play! Although, despite our best efforts, we could NOT convince him that Churu was delicious. Crunchy treats were much more his style!

For his bandage changes, we used a technique called a “tie over.” Sutures are placed around the wound, allowing a sterile bandage moistened with ointment to be placed directly over the wound. Sterile umbilical tape is then looped through the sutures to hold the bandage securely in place. From there, we would make Clock his very own little “jacket” by wrapping him in gauze and Vet Wrap. We unfortunately forgot to get a picture of him in his jackets!

When he was here for those bandage changes we would treat the wounds with the non contact head of our Class IV Laser. The laser helps speed up the healing process by reducing inflammation, increasing blood flow and stimulating cellular repair.

His healing progression was incredible to watch. The first progression photo shows just how fast the laser started working! 5 days post-op new tissue is growing rapidly. In the second progression photos, 12 days post-op, the wound has significantly closed on the other side. Although in that during photo, Clock's head was turned toward the camera causing some wrinkling on the skin.

Wounds as extensive as Clock’s can take months to heal on their own and carry an increased risk of infection and other complications. We were incredibly impressed with his progress throughout treatment and the way his family went above and beyond for him. Thank you for trusting us with Clock's care!

At some point, nearly every pet will need medication. It might be a short course or a lifelong medication of a chronic condition. Taking time now to train your pet to accept handling and medication can make those moments less stressful. This is not just for oral medications too! This can be medications for the eyes or ears as well.

Start with gentle handling: Practice lifting lips, opening the mouth, and touching ears or paws so your pet becomes comfortable with exam like handling.

Positive reinforcement: Use treats, praise, or rewards to help your pet associate handling with good experiences.

Practice “medication” sessions: Give small treats in pill pockets, or practice holding a syringe with a flavored liquid to mimic future medication routines. Pretend to add medication to the ear (use an empty bottle- do not add liquid to your pets ear!), rub the ear gently and praise immediately after!

Keep sessions short and positive. Always end on a good note so your pet builds confidence.

These small steps now can make a big difference later. Helping your pet receive necessary care quickly and comfortably when the time comes. Stay tuned for some tricks and tricks on how to medicated a more ornery patient 😎
