Let's talk about muzzle training, and why EVERY dog should have it, regardless of temperament.

Muzzles have a mixed reputation among dog owners. Many see them as cruel or unnecessary, while others see the value in the tool.

The reality is dogs of every size and breed need to be trained to wear a muzzle, whether or not they have a history of biting or aggression. The truth is that when injured or scared, even the most docile of dogs can become a bite risk. For the safety of your vet staff, your dog, and even yourself, muzzle training can save a ton of grief.

The key is to make it a positive and fun experience. Talk to an experienced trainer to help you get started if you're unsure how to proceed, and remember that the key is creating a game and giving lots of reinforcement.

Here's the best boy Cyrus modeling his muzzle!

When celebrating Thanksgiving, don't forget your pup!

Contrary to popular belief, bones are DANGEROUS for dogs. They splinter and can cause intestinal perforations and internal hemorrhaging. Dispose of them in a safe area away from your best friend!

Leash them, kennel them, or keep them behind a gate, just keep them and the trick-or-treaters SAFE! 🎃👻

The dog is a gentleman; I hope to go to his heaven not man's.

-Mark Twain

This is a subject that I have wanted to touch on for a while, and began writing about many times, only to find myself paralyzed with grief, and fear. The tragedy of a good dog is that inevitably, we will have to say goodbye, and the tragedy of a great dog is that we will have to carry on for years beyond that goodbye without them. That reality can cripple even the strongest of people, and that leads to the question of how, and when, do we see our friends off with dignity when we are a species built to protect ourselves from pain?

I wish there was an easy answer to this, but I know after years of working with dogs, the right answer isn't the easy one. As I watch my heart dog slip into the sunset of her life, I'd be lying if I said I'm ready to see her finish her journey here and go to the Bridge. I want her to live forever. I'll never be ready, but I know the day is approaching that will see my readiness tossed aside and have me confront that reality head on.

That leaves the questions: how and when? How is more concrete, because my family and I have strict rules regarding the how. We grieve after they're gone, and no matter how badly we are dying inside, we do our crying away from them until they are gone. I have a strong conviction that dogs understand grief, and so my goal is to never let my dogs think I need them when they are tired of fighting. This leads to an endless number of shower crying sessions, and sitting in my car crying alone as I prepare to say goodbye. Grief isn't pretty, but it is part of life.

The harder question to answer is when, and that's because 'when' is different for every dog. If we continue training and exercise, keeping mind and body sharp, we hope to see many years with our best friends, but sometimes genetics and sheer bad luck have other timelines. For our family 'when' boils down to when there are more bad days than good, when there's little quality of life, and when our friend shows us they are tired of fighting.

And when that 'when' comes, the one thing we remember in our family is our dog would be there to see us off, no matter how bad it hurt them, so we celebrate them and see them off to the Bridge with a Hershey's Kiss and all our love, then we grieve losing them for the rest of our lives.

That is the tragedy of love.

Great Things Take Time

We live in a world fueled by convenience: fast food, a vast universe of information at the touch of a button, or in our pockets, watching our favorite shows any time on streaming services, we've become spoiled.

We've become so hooked on instant gratification, that we've forgotten that some things are better when we take our time to achieve them properly. McDonald's is convenient, but does it compare to that gumbo Mama put work, time, and love into?

Our dogs are the same way. They require work, time, and love. Most problems don't arise instantly, and no problems have an instant fix. They require us to work towards a goal, and sometimes progress is slow, and it can feel nonexistent.

But, our best friends are worth it. The work and love you pour into your dog is given back to you in unconditional love and loyalty, and often a lifetime of laughs.

When it comes to our dogs, we have to slow down and approach issues with the attitude that a problem months or years in the making can't be solved overnight, and it definitely can't be solved in a single one hour session.

When hiring a dog trainer, expectations can't be that the trainer comes in and fixes everything in a session with no work on the owner's part. A dog trainer's main job is teaching you how to achieve the behavior you need for your dog, and sometimes teaching that can take many sessions and a long time, but a trainer needs to set you and your dog up for success. That is our ultimate goal. I often tell clients that "I can come in and get your dog to perform any behavior, but what good is it if you can't achieve the same results?" My learning to achieve those results took years of school, mentorship, hands on experience, and many failures along the way. As a client, you can't expect to learn everything in a single session and without some obstacles and failures along the way.

But don't give up. The results are worth it!

We have dear sweet Moose boarding with us for a few days while one of his humans has surgery.

Even though the boarding area is air conditioned, we're bringing him inside when the temps get above 90.

Heat stroke is a very real threat to your dog, and it can happen in under 10 minutes! Dogs with black and dark colored coats are especially prone to heat stroke, as are northern breeds like Huskys and Malamutes. It's better to be safe than sorry!

We hope Moose's human has a speedy recovery, and we will be sad to say bye to him, but we are enjoying every second with this amazing boy!
