House Hunting With Dogs: What Makes a Home Truly Dog‑Friendly

Ever wonder what makes a home perfect for both you and your pup? In this episode of Behavior & Bordeaux, I’m chatting with Michelle Mechem of Roost Historic Living at The Wyld Dock Bar — where we talk about dog‑friendly home features, safe spaces, and even plants that can be toxic to dogs.

Grab a glass of wine and join us dockside for a fun, informative conversation that’ll make you see house hunting through your dog’s eyes.

Sheba and I are getting ready for our next long drive, and it inspired my newest Substack article.

“Thelma & Louise (But Fuzzier): Road‑Tripping With Your Dog" breaks down how to make car travel easier, safer, and more enjoyable for your pup.

If you’re planning a getaway with your furry co‑pilot, give it a read.

And feel free to share your favorite dog‑travel stories in the comments — I love hearing them!

Tomorrow is my birthday, which means I’m doing some reminiscing — thinking about how a critter‑obsessed little girl from upstate NY ended up building a life around helping dogs and their people.

If you’d like to take a walk down memory lane with me, my new Substack article is live. And if you feel like sending a little birthday love my way, it'd make my day even brighter!

Tomorrow is my birthday (yay, me!), and like most milestones, it has me looking back at the winding, wonderful path that brought me to where I am today.

Sheba is SO going to miss her best neighbors Alun and Eden, doggy friends Isaac and Rosie and having her walking buddies!! This was their greeting on their last morning walking together 🥹

I'm going to miss them too. Some people come into our lives for just a short time but make such a big impact, and they certainly did 💓. Thank you Eden and Alun for the countless walks, fun conversations, dinners enjoyed, helping hands and playtime in your yard so Sheba and Isaac could run around. We wish you ALL the best on your new journey and will have to set up a visit! I'd have to start out at midnight to get Sheba there by walking time 😉

IT'S HERE! ✨Our new Behavior & Bordeaux Episode! 🐶🍷
We’re sipping on the deliciously refreshing Love(r) Rosé (perfect for spring) and talking about something every dog owner should know: how to help your dog relax, naturally.

Dogs can’t pour a glass of wine when they’re stressed, but there are other remedies that we can use to help them regulate their emotions and nervous system in those tough times - long car rides, a move or other life transition, thunderstorms or fireworks, even visits from those slightly crazy family members.

In this episode, I’m sharing my favorite natural calming aids — from herbal remedies and CBD to flower essences and essential oils — and explaining how they support behavior change by lowering arousal. I’ll also show you how to tell which oils your dog prefers and which ones to avoid.

If your dog struggles with anxiety, reactivity, or hyperactivity, or just an occasional bout of stress, this episode is full of gentle, biologically appropriate ways to help them feel better.

Ever wonder why your dog suddenly forgets how to “sit” the moment you step onto a different surface… or why they act like a garden gnome is a threat to national security?

My latest post dives into what happens when an experience is NEW for your dog — and why their brains sometimes short‑circuit in the most endearing (and confusing) ways.

From Scout’s run‑in with a backwards‑walking lady to Sheba’s hilarious filming fiasco, I’m sharing real stories, behavior science, and practical tips to help you understand your dog’s “processing and communication gap.”

If your dog ever seems aloof, distracted, overstimulated, or “suddenly untrained,” this one’s for you.

And let me know if your dog has ever had a “what on earth is THAT?” moment — I love hearing your stories!

✨ Meet Ziggy the Samoyed! ✨

I had the absolute joy of working with a very special dog this week — Ziggy, a 2‑year‑old Samoyed with a sweet spirit and the fluffiest, snow‑white coat you’ve ever seen.

Samoyeds aren’t a breed we see often here, so getting to know Ziggy has been such a treat. These dogs are part of the Nordic breed group, originally bred in Siberia. They’re known for their thick, gorgeous coats, expressive black eyes, curled tails, and that famous “Sammy smile.” They’re also independent thinkers with a naturally higher prey and chase drive — traits that once helped them herd reindeer and thrive in harsh Arctic conditions 🦌

Ziggy’s story is a little different from most young dogs. He spent the first part of his life on a breeding farm, surrounded by other dogs and space but never exposed to the distractions of the everyday world — no neighborhood walks, no trail adventures. So now, walking on leash is a new concept to him.

And with “new” comes big feelings.

On walks, Ziggy is learning how to manage his impulses when he sees other dogs, cats, squirrels… basically anything that moves. His instincts tell him to chase, but his brain is learning a whole new skill set:
pause, breathe, think, and choose.

Ziggy shines in sports like Fast CAT and Barn Hunt. It's easy for him to channel his focus in structured activities — no surprise for a breed built for stamina, problem‑solving, and purposeful work. That drive is part of what makes Samoyeds so special.

But the best part?
He’s already making huge progress.

Ziggy is learning the mechanics of loose‑leash walking, building a deeper connection with his new mom and dad, and discovering that the world isn’t so overstimulating when you approach it with patience in small slices. Each walk gets a little easier, a little calmer, and a little more joyful.

I’m so proud of this fluffy boy and excited to watch him grow into the comfortable, grounded companion he’s meant to be.

Here’s to Ziggy — the sweetest snow cloud with a heart full of determination. 🤍🐾

Look who I got to meet this evening 😍 This lovely little Lab lady named Phoebe is just getting started with life - and we are working together to put her on the right track. To help her build manners and life skills (like settling while a guest is over), and set her up for a lifestyle of good behavior. Puppy sessions = puppy kisses, and that always makes me smile this big 😁🐶💗

📣 New Behavior & Bordeaux Episode! 🐶🍷

If your dog could use a little extra relaxation (and honestly, who couldn’t), this episode is the perfect treat.

In this episode, I’m sharing simple, connection‑building dog massage techniques that boost oxytocin, ease stress, and help your dog feel safe, grounded, and seen. I’ll show you how to figure out which massage style is your dog’s “cup of tea,” demo a few of my favorite strokes, and talk about the magic of TTouch — a gentle bodywork method designed to help animals relax and bring out their best behavior.

And because it wouldn’t be Behavior & Bordeaux without a little indulgence… we’re sipping on a limited‑edition chocolate wine from Butterducks Winery, our wonderful local family‑owned gem. Yes, chocolate wine! And yes, it’s as fun as it sounds.

If you’re looking for a cozy, feel‑good way to bond with your dog, this episode is full of easy techniques you can start using tonight.
