Daisy Pupdate – Year 3
Merry Christmas all!! Can you believe it’s been 3 years?
Well, little Miss Daisy is coming out of her shell more and more. She is also showing us that she has some silly, stubborn quirks. She is beginning to enjoy car rides a little bit. She starts out shaking and quaking and then realizes that she doesn’t know where she’s going and settles down. She’s been with us on some short trips and spent the night at the Airbnb. She is such a great traveler unlike Myah who barks at every little noise. Daisy is just so calm and quiet. She enjoyed walking around Savannah on the wharf but wanted to go into every restaurant and store that had an open door! She has this thing now that when she is tired and had enough, she just picks a person and sits right next to them. Poor man in Savannah didn’t know what to make of her when she did it to him. Thank goodness it’s not like when we first got her and she had to be dragged along. She gets her little break and then decides to move on. She’s also like a lot of people and doesn’t like to potty in new environments. She LOVES couches and will gravitate towards one right away.
Before Thanksgiving, I took both dogs to get professional portraits done. My first thought was, “what was I thinking?” but she became the little ham that she is. Her photos came out so well and they both did really well sitting and posing until the end when they realized that there were things in the room to investigate.
She has decided that Myah is her safe person and that she can learn from her. She follows Myah almost everywhere when they are in unfamiliar areas. When Daisy is alone she will run back to the safety of the house or the place that she knows. She has gotten braver and will now venture almost to the mailbox at the end of the driveway. At the dog park she follows Myah everywhere and doesn’t pay much attention to the other dogs at all. I often wonder what she does when we have them at Dogtown, which is where they board and have play time during the day.
Thanksgiving this year was spent at the beach. We took the dogs and stayed in Sanibel, Florida just a quick walk to the beach. She loved the beach but NOT the water. The waves moving in and out scare her. She was such the good girl though. The island is super dog friendly, and they were able to go wherever we decided to take them.
So, the positives for the year are that our girl is getting braver and braver. She is so much more trusting and will now come when called without all the stubbornness. The best part is that she will come and sit her little self-right in front of me! She’s watching Myah play and the ears go up in curiosity when the toy gets thrown. Myah has decided to share the toys so Daisy gets to chib on them until she decides to try to pull them apart. She absolutely loves rawhide treats and will get them all soft and goopy, take a rest and then go back at it. I caught her recently with a stick from the back yard that she picked up and decided to investigate. Pretty soon, I expect that she’ll be chasing them! She has decided since she’s been on medication that peanut butter is the best thing ever!
Now the downside. Health issues with her leg have been a constant. She just can’t stop licking and ends up getting it infected. She is now forced to have it wrapped with a loose bandage. Suddenly, we noticed that she had a round wound the size of a penny on her side. She went on medication, and the wound developed a lump that I was thinking may be a cyst or something. Anyway, the doctor was concerned enough to do surgery, take the area around the wound to send off to biopsy. Apparently, Golden Retrievers are prone to skin cancer – who knew! So we’re still waiting for results and hoping for the best possible outcome. In the meantime, she’s the happiest girl on the planet, always with a big smile for everyone. She is the most loving dog ever and we are so lucky to have her with us and learn about her as she learns about the world around her.
Merry Christmas from the Harpers!
