One of the biggest mistakes people make in training is teaching a dog a pattern instead of teaching a concept.

A dog may understand heel when you’re moving forward in a straight line. But what happens when the picture changes?

Can they maintain position when you move differently?
Can they maintain position in a different heel position?
Can they still understand the expectation?

Today’s group session focused on exactly that.

By changing the picture while keeping the expectation the same, we help dogs develop understanding rather than memorization.

Because reliability doesn’t come from doing the same thing over and over.

It comes from understanding what is being asked of them.

One of the most common mistakes we see in training is timing.

In this session, the dog was placed into the correct heel position. The issue wasn’t the position—it was when the command was given.

The handler began moving first and then said “heel” several steps later.

To a dog, that often means the movement becomes the cue, not the word.

If we want reliable obedience, the verbal command needs to come before the physical motion.

Small details like this are why training isn’t just about teaching the dog—it’s also about teaching the handler.

🩵 PTSD is a topic that hits close to home for me.

Almost 6 years ago, when COVID shut down the bases and overseas missions came to a stop, I came home and we started Leash & Beyond K9 Solutions.

🙏 I can’t put into words how grateful I am for my Service Dog, Rage. He has been there through some of my darkest moments and helped me navigate one of the hardest transitions of my life.

My career included years in Law Enforcement working SWAT and Drug Interdiction with K-9s, followed by nearly 10 years overseas as a Private Contractor in Iraq and Afghanistan running protection and explosive detection missions alongside working dogs.

Coming home wasn’t easy.

The transition back to civilian life brought challenges that many people don’t see or understand. Through it all, Rage was there. The bond between a Service Dog and their handler is difficult to explain unless you’ve lived it. He didn’t just help me manage symptoms—he helped me rebuild my life.

According to estimates, nearly 12 million Americans are living with PTSD each year, and approximately 7% of veterans will experience PTSD at some point in their lives. Personally, I believe those numbers are much higher. Too many people suffer in silence and never seek help.

Most people focus on preparing their homes.

Few think about preparing their dogs.

If an evacuation order was issued tomorrow, would your dog be able to:
