Let's talk about seizures for a minute.
They can happen to your pet usually without warning.
They are scary to see.
You don't know what to do for your pet.

There are some things that can look like a seizure but are not, such as:
1. Neuromuscular Collapse=Activity Associated Weakness
2. Involuntary Movement Abnormalities=Tremors/Head Bob
3. Syncope=Fainting/Cardiovascular Event
4. Sleep Disorders=Narcolepsy/Cataplexy/R.E.M. Disorders
5. Compulsive Behavioral Disorders="fly biting", "tail chasing"
6. Severe Neck Pain
7. Acute Vestibular Syndrome=Vertigo

When it happens, try and get as much information as possible for the Veterinarian such as:
*loss of consciousness?
*loss of bladder or bowels?
*how long did it last?
*was the episode related to just consuming food?
*was the event related to sleeping or during the night?
*any exposure to possible toxins?
*was your pet back to normal right after?
*was it a single event in a single day or were there multiple episodes?

Try to get a video if possible, then call your Veterinarian or head to the nearest Veterinary Urgent Care or Emergency Hospital

Let’s talk emergencies with cats for a minute.

Feline Aortic Thromboembolism (FATE) -
a saddle thrombus as it is commonly known.

This is a life-threatening emergency that requires immediate veterinary intervention.

A blood clot lodges where the aorta splits to supply blood to the the hind legs.

The blood clot causes severe pain, sudden hind-leg weakness or paralysis.

This condition is not usually predictable or preventable, but sometimes treatable with early diagnosis.

Let’s talk about wounds for a minute.

Most everyone has what’s needed at home to clean a wound you’ve just discovered on your furry family member- warm water, soap, hydrogen peroxide, betadine/iodine, etc.

A few things to know :
1. Initial cleaning should be warm or tepid water, mild soap, dilute betadine/iodine (to a weak tea color), or a small amount of hydrogen peroxide if there is contamination
2. Pat dry
3. Evaluation of the extent of the wound

When hydrogen peroxide touches blood or tissue, it rapidly breaks down, releases oxygen bubbles, and creates a fizz that can help loosen debris. The fizz is why people associate using it to “clean” with.

Here’s the catch: hydrogen peroxide doesn’t only react with bacteria or debris. It also irritates healthy tissue and damages cells needed for healing. Thereby damaging “good” tissues.

Memorial Day weekend means getting outdoors, grilling, and spending time with pets and family.

It’s also a time for remembrance-for the brave people who served and gave their lives. For the working animals who stood beside them. For the people & pets we’ve personally said goodbye to.

Memorial Day weekend is also the unofficial start of summer ☀️😎

This weekend in particular we see lost pets, overheated pets, diarrhea from all the different picnic foods, dogfights when multiple family dogs gather and foreign body ingestions, to name a few.

Here are some tips to keep pets out of trouble:

1). Party Smart- keep the goods away from pets
-BBQ grease in the collection container
-Grill cooking utensils/grill cleaning brushes/charcoal
-Corncobs, skewers, foil, meat wrappers, trash

2) Provide safe spaces for pets to get away from noise and strangers

3) Provide plenty of water and cool spaces; heat exhaustion/heat stroke are real dangers

4). Microchips, ID tags, and collars should be up to date. When pets gets separated from their families, it can be nearly impossible to reunite them in a strange area with stretched resources- this holiday weekend is one of the biggest for lost pets

It’s corncob season for Veterinarians 😳
What does that mean?

It means :

Dogs like them.
Soaked in butter.
Dogs will grab them from your plate.
Dogs will get them out of the trash.
Dogs will find them out camping where others have tossed them in the woods, the firepit, etc.
They DO NOT make good chew toys because they are “all natural”.
They do NOT break down in the gut.
They cause obstructions.
Yes, even those 3 little pieces.
They often do not pass.
Completely preventable 🐾

What is the circled foreign body swallowed by a cat?

Believe it or not, this is one of the MOST common objects that cats ingest !!

Answer: Nerf Dart/Nerf Bullet

A Nerf dart in a cat’s digestive tract is not something to ignore.

Early veterinary evaluation is critical to prevent a possible intestinal obstruction that could become a perforation. If your cat has ingested one and is showing any signs of illness, seek veterinary care promptly. If your kids have these, keeping them put away when not in use may save your kitty a veterinary visit.
