The end of an era .... we've waited a few weeks to announce it, but Whiskey has found his new home.

Some of you know Whiskey's sad story. The short version is that after his former owner ran into some medical issues and could no longer pay his boarding bill, Whiskey found himself here without a home to go to. Now, anyone that knows us knows that we are NOT Lab people esp busy working Lab people. First step was to get Whiskey some important medical care along with bringing him current on vaccines and the old snippydo. Then with the help of Texas Sporting Breed Rescue, we were connected with a perfect Lab home for the chocolate dude. After years of his constant and demanding presence, it does feel a little weird not to have him here, but we are thrilled for him and his new life.

We wish him well, and (no offense) hopefully will never see him again. 🤣

Let's chat about self soothing with our pal Stuart.

We would all like to bubble wrap our pups to keep them safe, but that isn't realistic long term. By encouraging your young pup (yes, Stuart is enormous but he's just a babe) to self soothe, you're helping to build confidence, increasing their independence, and most importantly teaching them resilience. Showing your pup how to bounce back when bad things do happen is one of the most important life lessons you can gift them.

Michael was doing something "scary" .... well scary to Stuart ... by spreading some mulch. This is a task that Stuart isn't used to, and Stuart was stuck between protecting humans and being nosy about this new thing. He came to me several times for reassurance. I gave him some pets but encouraged him to continue toinvestigate. He did but kept coming back to me.

Because Stuart won't always have me to lean on, we have to find another alternative for him to release the tension. In cases like this, we use the "find your toy" game. This game encourages the pups to find a toy and play with it themselves. By chewing or otherwise playing, they're working their mouths and brains to take their focus off the "scary" thing. The other benefit is that rather than running or hiding, they're staying near the "scary" event, observing, so their brains are getting positive feedback from the play while they're watching whatever has them concerned.

Any toy will work, but something that encourages chewing like these Nylabones or a food toy will help motivate them to stay in that moment. Remember that it's okay to show some reassurance when they're scared, but we also need to show them, without forcing them, that not everything is that scary.

Happy training! Oh, and Stuart is going to a foster today who will likely adopt him, but there are always more wonderful adoptable dogs at Texas Great Pyrenees Rescue.

Thor would like to lodge a formal complaint. He says that he wants to play outside but he does not want to get sprinkled on. I told him he wouldn't melt, and he'd like to lodge an additonal complaint about that.

Day Two of the Stuart Saga ...

Stuart would like everyone to know that he has effectively neutralized the cart threat with his scary barking. He has since investigated it and determined that is now just a cart, and while it did move seemingly on its own, the demon it clearly had yesterday is gone. Thank goodness for Stuart's "proteck hoomans" skill.

Stuart would like to lodge a complaint about the suspicious looking cart filled with dog food. If you, too, feel these things are suspicious, he'd like you to join him in circling and barking at inanimate objects.

FYI, he might be enormous, but he's just a baby. He's still learning about life.

Happy 37th (that's what he says at least) birthday to the bestest trainer and play camp dad around. The pups will celebrate with kisses and mandatory butt scratches. 🎉🥳

When you've got more sass than sense and decide to take on a dog that is literally 10 times your size to protect the un-boxed, not yours, dog food. Don't worry, she told Michael allllll about it.

Meet our new Texas Great Pyrenees Rescue friend, sweet Sadie Sage. This middle aged gal is moving from work life to couch life and loving the transition. She's proving to be a calm, gentle gal that doesn't get her feathers ruffled easily with the other dogs. She is well-mannered, quiet, a bit shy but very sweet and loving. She is house trained, crate trained, walks well on a leash. She has experience around cats, kids, and a variety of livestock. If you're looking for a golden era gal, fill out an adoption application.

Our sweet little friend Theo is beginning to feel better after the loss of her longtime pal and packmate last week (all hail Baxter). Just as grieving looks different for individual people, the same goes for dogs. This sweet girl was set to board anyway, and mom, who is also grieving the loss of her longtime pal, asked if she could bring her a day early to see if a different environment could break her out of her funk. Luckily, she has her wonderful friends along with our dogs here to help. They've been very patient to give her space as she needs, engage her when she's ready, and don't get jealous when she has needed a lot of extra "uppies" snuggle time. We're grateful to "borrow" such amazing, well-balanced, and social pups, and "TeTe" is slowly getting back to her old self.
