Important information for owners of dogs from our Erna z Daskonu and Fanta van de Duca Vallei lines (an Erna daughter)!
As the dogs from these litters have grown, I've gathered some concerning health information that I feel is important to share. At least one dog from each breeding combination I've done with these females, and in some cases more than one, has developed seizures or epilepsy.
I don't have answers as to why this is happening, and I can't say whether these cases share the same underlying cause. However, given the pattern I've seen, I want to make sure the owners of these dogs are aware and can make informed decisions about their health care.
One thing I'd particularly like you to discuss with your veterinarian is the use of isoxazoline flea and tick medications. The FDA has warned that medications in this class have been associated with neurological side effects, including muscle tremors, loss of coordination, and seizures. Most dogs tolerate these medications without problems, but neurological events have been reported, including in dogs with no previous history of seizures.
In one dog from a Fanta litter, a neurological event occurred after the first dose of one of these medications. That timing is worth noting, although it doesn't establish that the medication caused the event.
Products in this class include:
• Bravecto
• Credelio
• NexGard
• Simparica
• Simparica Trio
I'm sharing this information not to cause alarm or to suggest that everyone should stop using these products, but because I believe it's important for you to know what I'm seeing in these lines. Please discuss your dog's family history with your veterinarian when deciding which flea, tick, and parasite prevention is appropriate.
If your dog has experienced seizures or other neurological symptoms, please let me know. Having accurate information about these cases may help us better understand what's happening and make more informed breeding decisions going forward.
Thank you for helping me keep track of the health of these dogs. Their well-being matters, and sharing information is an important part of responsible breeding.
