Originally introduced as a “BPA-free” alternative, BPS functions as a potent endocrine disruptor that mimics estrogen, interfering with normal metabolic, reproductive, and developmental processes. Because these thermal coatings are loosely applied rather than chemically bound to the paper, the toxic compound easily rubs off onto the skin and can enter the bloodstream—an absorption process that accelerates significantly if hands are wet or coated with alcohol-based hand sanitizers. Public health advocates warn that the chronic, repeated exposure faced by cashiers and retail workers poses more serious long-term risks, including potential links to hormone-driven cancers. To mitigate these hazards for the everyday shopper, experts recommend that consumers actively transition to digital or email receipts and avoid using hand sanitizers immediately before or after handling thermal paper.
