The purpose of the JRTCA breed standard has never been to create a show dog.

Its purpose is to preserve a working terrier.

For 50 years, the JRTCA has focused on protecting the Jack Russell Terrier's working ability, versatility, soundness, intelligence, and character.

The result is a breed that remains remarkably true to its origins.
Not because it stood still.

But because dedicated owners and breeders never lost sight of what mattered most.

Behind the scenes of responsible breeding…

Health testing isn’t just a formality.
It’s used to make informed decisions—pairing dogs responsibly to reduce risk.

That’s what preserves the real Jack Russell Terrier.

As we celebrate 50 years of the Jack Russell Terrier Club of America, here’s something you might not know…

A Jack Russell Terrier does best when given a job, whether that is structured activity, training, or interactive play. Purpose helps prevent unwanted behaviors.

This is what 50 years of preserving a working terrier looks like.

What makes JRTCA breeders different?

We understand our lines.
Not just the dogs in front of us—but generations behind them.
That knowledge matters when making breeding decisions.

That’s what preserves the real Jack Russell Terrier.

The Jack Russell Terrier breed standard was never written to create a cookie-cutter dog.

Instead, it was written to preserve a working terrier.

Every aspect of the Jack Russell Terrier's structure—from its size and chest span to its movement and proportions—serves a purpose.

The standard is designed to ensure that the terrier can do the job it was originally bred to do: follow quarry to ground and work effectively underground.

In the JRTCA, beauty has always been secondary to function.
A Jack Russell Terrier should first and foremost be a capable working terrier.

Myth: All dog registries work the same way.
Reality: Some registries automatically register entire litters.

JRTCA evaluates each dog individually—based on its own merit.

That’s what preserves the real Jack Russell Terrier.

This !!! The Real Jack Russell does not get registered “ papers” till they are 1 yr . Soooo many people fall into the trap “Well it has it papers” There is your first red flag 🚩 start asking questions

Myth: If it has papers, it must be good.

Reality: Papers only show a dog was registered—not how or why.

In the JRTCA, registration is based on the individual dog meeting real standards—not just being born.

That’s what preserves the real Jack Russell Terrier.

As we celebrate 50 years of the Jack Russell Terrier Club of America, here’s something you might not know…

Jack Russell Terriers are bred to think independently, problem solve, and use their nose with precision. These traits are not taught—they are preserved through careful breeding.

This is what 50 years of preserving a working terrier looks like.
