โ˜€๏ธ Summer is here, and that means itโ€™s important to keep our pets safe in the heat! ๐Ÿพ

From hot pavement to heatstroke risks, warmer weather can become dangerous quickly, especially for pets who are outside, active, brachycephalic (flat-faced), very young, elderly, or overweight.

A few simple precautions can make a huge difference:
๐Ÿ’ง Always provide fresh water
๐ŸŒณ Make sure pets have access to shade
๐Ÿš— Never leave pets in parked cars
๐Ÿพ Avoid hot pavement during walks
๐ŸŒ… Plan outdoor time for cooler mornings or evenings

Knowing the signs of heatstroke can save lives. If your pet is excessively panting, drooling, vomiting, struggling to breathe, or seems weak/disoriented, seek veterinary care immediately.

Stay safe, stay cool, and enjoy the summer with your pets ๐Ÿ’™

๐Ÿฑ๐Ÿ’จ National Feline Asthma Awareness Month ๐Ÿ’จ๐Ÿฑ

Did you know cats can have asthma too?

Feline asthma is a chronic inflammatory condition that affects the airways in a catโ€™s lungs, making it difficult for them to breathe normally. During an asthma flare-up, the airways become inflamed and narrowed, which can cause coughing, wheezing, or labored breathing.

Many owners mistake feline asthma symptoms for hairballs because cats often crouch low to the ground and extend their neck while coughing. But unlike a hairball episode, nothing is usually produced.

Signs of feline asthma may include:
๐Ÿพ Coughing or hacking
๐Ÿพ Wheezing
๐Ÿพ Rapid or difficult breathing
๐Ÿพ Open-mouth breathing
๐Ÿพ Low energy or exercise intolerance

This video shows what a feline asthma episode can look like:

Feline asthma can range from mild to severe, but with proper diagnosis and management, many cats can continue to live happy, comfortable lives. Treatment may include inhalers, oral medications, environmental changes, and reducing exposure to triggers like smoke, dust, candles, or strong fragrances.

If your cat has been having coughing episodes or breathing changes, donโ€™t assume itโ€™s โ€œjust hairballs.โ€ Itโ€™s always worth having them evaluated. ๐Ÿ’™

๐ŸŽ—๏ธ What Month Is It? Itโ€™s Pet Cancer Awareness Month ๐ŸŽ—๏ธ

Cancer is (unfortunately) a common disease seen in pets, especially as they age. While hearing the word โ€œcancerโ€ can feel overwhelming, early detection and advances in veterinary medicine have helped many pets live longer, more comfortable lives.

Some signs pet owners should watch for include:
๐Ÿพ New lumps or bumps
๐Ÿพ Weight loss
๐Ÿพ Changes in appetite
๐Ÿพ Limping or difficulty moving
๐Ÿพ Persistent sores or swelling
๐Ÿพ Changes in energy levels

Regular exams play an important role in catching concerns early, which is why routine veterinary visits matter so much.

Pet Cancer Awareness Month is also a great opportunity to support organizations helping fund cancer research, treatment, and assistance for pets and their families. If youโ€™re interested in learning more or donating, organizations such as Animal Cancer Foundation (the https://acfoundation.org/) and help support pets facing cancer through research, education, and financial assistance.

This month, we honor the pets bravely fighting cancer, remember the ones weโ€™ve lost, and continue working toward a future with better treatments and outcomes for all animals. ๐Ÿ’™

Phase II-Omics of the Canine Cancer Genome Project is now underway, focusing on groundbreaking genomic and proteomic research for canine and human cancers.

Today is National Rescue Dog Day, and we would like to use this as an opportunity to showcase our beloved patient Luna, who is a rescue dog herself! Here's Luna's story:

Our family started fostering with the Golden Retriever Rescue of Iowa in June of 2025. Since then, we have been lucky to have 4 dogs join our family for varying lengths of time before moving to their forever families.

In December of 2025, we traveled to Missouri to bring Birdie into our home. We knew she was a young girl who had already had a litter of puppies. She was being rehomed due to not getting the attention she deserved due to a family memberโ€™s medical needs. At first, she was shy and scared but then jumped right into our van and began to snuggle with our sons and give kisses. On the drive home, she made her way onto my lap in the front seat where she settled her 68 pounds of love.

The night she came home with us, she decided to choose us as her forever family. She played fetch with the boys which is still her favorite pastime and snuggled right into our bed where she sleeps now each night. We knew from the first night that she would be our first foster-to-forever. We decided to name her Luna after our favorite Harry Potter character.

Luna has already had the chance to teach another foster pup the ropes of being in a loving home. She spends her days sleeping while dad works from home, getting belly scratches, and listening for the bus so her boys can throw her ball. In the past 5 months she has grown into a confident dog who loves to go on car rides and come with us on any family adventure.
