We'd like to welcome Penelope to the herd! Penelope is a 1.5 year old Brangus mix, who comes from a champion line of bucking bulls. Our resident cow, Rose, was definitely interested in meeting Penelope. Both are doing fine in our petting zoo area. One other note, Penelope has dwarfism and will probably not get much bigger.

Katmai National Park is celebrating Fat Bear Week!! This is the time of year, Katmai's brown bear population is fattening up to prepare for winter and people get to vote for which bear they think packed on the most pounds.

Fat bear week, just so happens to coincide with Zoo Idaho's Phat Bear celebration!! Stay tuned for tomorrow to see our phat bears in action!!!😁

CORRECTION: What we thought was a rare visiting black vulture, turns out to be a juvenile turkey vulture! Still, a great compare and contrast of the different life stages!!

For all of you birders out there, we have a rare visitor at Zoo Idaho today. At least one black vulture, Coragyps atratus, has been hanging out with the turkey vultures. In the photo, black vulture on the left, turkey vulture on the right. Black vultures are primarily found throughout the southern U.S., but on rare occasions during late summer, they can venture further north.
