What is demodectic mange?

That tiny, creepy-looking creature in the photo is a Demodex mite.🧐

Demodex mites normally live in the hair follicles of dogs and, in small numbers, usually cause no problems at all. But when a dog’s immune system can’t keep the mite population under control, the mites can multiply and cause demodicosis (demodectic mange).

What can demodex look like?
• Hair loss, often in small patches
• Red or irritated skin
• Scaly or crusty skin
• Itching—although some dogs aren't very itchy
• In more severe cases, skin infections and larger areas of hair loss

Puppies vs. adult dogs
Young puppies can develop demodex as their immune system is still developing. Adult dogs developing generalized demodex may need further investigation for an underlying condition that could be affecting their immune system. It is NOT contagious to other dogs or humans.

🔬 How do we diagnose it?
We can check for Demodex mites with a skin scraping and examine the sample under a microscope—just like the one pictured here!

Demodex is treatable, and most dogs do very well with appropriate veterinary care. ❤️

🐱 "But my cat never goes outside!" 😼

We hear you!

Your cat lives a life of luxury, lounging on the couch, judging everyone from the windowsill, and occasionally knocking things off the counter. Surely they don't need parasite prevention, right?

WRONG! Even indoor cats can get parasites!

Here's how those uninvited guests can find their way inside:

🦟 Fleas: These tiny jumpers can hitch a ride into your home on clothing, other pets, or visitors.

🪱 Intestinal worms: Parasite eggs can be tracked indoors on shoes, and cats can become infected by swallowing infected fleas or other carriers.

🦟 Mosquitoes: Even indoor cats aren't completely safe from mosquitoes, which can carry heartworm disease.

🐾 The bottom line: Just because your cat doesn't go outside doesn't mean parasites can't come inside!

Regular parasite prevention helps protect your feline friend from unwanted creepy crawlies and the health problems they can cause. We love Revolution Plus, but would be happy to help you figure out what might be a good fit for your kitty.

Because the only thing your indoor cat should be bringing home is more attitude! 😹

We’re excited to partner with the NCCTE Veterinary Careers Plymouth program at Plymouth High School for the 2026–2027 school year! 🐾

We have a few students from the program joining us throughout the school year to shadow, learn, and gain hands-on experience in a veterinary practice. You may see them helping in our exam rooms, assisting up front, or learning alongside our team. 🐶🐱

The students are also getting experience in grooming through the Plymouth school program. So, if your pup needs a bath, you may have the opportunity to support these students while they continue building their skills! 🛁🐾

We’re also excited to have one of the students learning directly alongside our groomer here at Parrett Veterinary Clinic, gaining additional hands-on experience in professional grooming.

We love being able to support the next generation of veterinary professionals and give these students an opportunity to see what working in the veterinary field is really like. ❤️🐾
