Amazon Parrots Have Different Voices 🦜

Not all parrots sound the same and Amazon parrots can even have their own “accents.”

The 30+ species of Amazon parrots (Amazona) are distributed across Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean, with many species adapted to distinct regional and island habitats.

Amazon parrots can develop regional vocal dialects, with birds in the same population developing characteristic vocal patterns. Different Amazon species also have distinct flight calls and other characteristic vocalizations.

Their voices do much more than make sounds. Different vocalizations can communicate mating, feeding, alarm, aggression, distress, flight, defense, and communication with chicks.

Instinctive Fear in Parrots: What Scares Them?

Fear is perfectly appropriate. Our parrots are naturally alert, and many of the things that scare them make perfect sense: things flying overhead, snake-like shapes moving across the ground, or objects that suddenly or quietly move through their space. These can look and act a lot like predators.

Parrots also really don't like being caught unaware!

But natural, rational fears don't have to turn into panic. They can be moderated through learning, positive experiences, and soothing support.

That's why we have a responsibility to give our captive companions the experiences they need to live successfully in our homes.

We aren't trying to eliminate fear. We're helping them learn what actually matters.

Through experience, learning, and reassurance, our bird companions can learn to turn rational fears from events that require hypervigilance into events of relatively little consequence.

The goal isn't a fearless parrot. It's a confident one, one who has learned what deserves their attention and what doesn't. 🦜

Feather Picking in Parrots

Feather picking is a common and often frustrating problem in pet parrots. It can have medical, behavioral, or environmental causes.
