Say hello to Oreo 🖤

This handsome 4-year-old had a scary couple of weeks. He came to us with a urinary blockage, which is a true emergency for cats, particularly male cats. Our team got him comfortable right away, kept a close eye on him around the clock, and when the problem came back, our surgeons stepped in with a procedure to help keep it from happening again.

The good news? Oreo is home, healing, and back to being his sweet self.

Here's the part every cat parent should know: a urinary blockage can turn life-threatening in a matter of hours. If your cat is going in and out of the litter box, straining with little coming out, crying, or hiding more than usual, don't wait. Call us. It could save their life.

Elli is one happy girl! 🧡

When Elli, a sweet dachshund mix, came to our Emergency Department in late August, she was in pain and needed help feeling more comfortable. After staying with us over the weekend, she met with Dr. William Kay, our neurologist, who used a CT scan to better understand what was causing her symptoms.

Elli then had surgery to relieve pressure on her spine and help her get back on her feet. At her two-week recheck and rehabilitation visit with Dr. Tiffany Kay, she was already walking again and practically trying to run out of her sling!

Her family is thrilled with her progress, and their biggest challenge now is slowing down this happy, energetic girl while she continues to heal. We’re so proud of Elli and grateful to have been part of her journey.

A slipped disc can affect pets, too. When disc material herniates and presses on the spinal cord, it can cause pain, weakness, or even loss of the ability to walk.

A hemilaminectomy, like the one being performed by Dr. William Kay Jr. in this photo, relieves that pressure by removing a tiny section of bone so the spinal cord can recover.

It's a great example of the advanced care available right here at our hospital. 🧡

Important Update: Due to unexpected circumstances, the Emergency Room at Hickory Veterinary and Specialty Hospital will be closed tonight and will reopen at 6:00 AM tomorrow.

If your pet needs care overnight, we recommend Metropolitan Veterinary Urgent Care & Specialty (MVUCS) in Wayne for urgent care needs or Metropolitan Veterinary Associates (MVA) in Norristown for 24/7 emergency care.
