Tonometry 👁️
This special instrument measures the intraocular pressure within the pet's eye. As you can see this process is painless and non- invasive, pet's can typically be awake and alert during this process. Normal eye pressures range from 15-25 mmHg.

When would we use this instrument on your pet?

If your pet presents to us with red, bloodshot or cloudy eyes, is squinting or holding their eye closed, has bulging or an enlarged eye, or excessive tearing, this may be a test we recommend running. This will help us determine if your pet may have low pressure (uveitis) or elevated pressures (glaucoma). Both of these issues can cause severe damage to the eye if not addressed.

Xylitol

This sugar free sweetener can be deadly for your dog. Even extremely low doses can cause low blood sugar, liver failure and even death. Symptoms can happen rapidly, in as little as 30 minutes. Symptoms can include vomiting, weakness, seizures, unsteadiness, and yellowing of the skin - caused by liver failure. 1-2 pieces of sugar free gum could be deadly to small breed dogs. Most common sources of Xylitol are sugar free gum, sugar free peanut butter, mints, toothpaste and some medications/supplements. Please be sure to check all labels for this ingredient before offering items to your pet.

The bugs have come out in full force this year!!! These small bullseye looking spots typically found on your dogs belly or underside are usually caused by a bite from a fly. These spots are generally not itchy. Most of these spots resolve within 1 week on their own without any intervention.

Tick season is in full swing. Be sure your pet is protected! There are many species of ticks, some carry disease's such as Lyme and Anaplasma. We are now also seeing Lone Star ticks in the state of Wisconsin. This type of tick can carry Ehrlichiosis and Rocky Mountain Spotted fever. PREVENTION IS KEY!! If you are wondering about what type of products to use for your pets, please reach out to the clinic. We are happy to provide guidance.

Roundworms are internal parasites that both dogs and cats can pick up. They are long spaghetti like worms. Puppies and kittens can pick up these parasites directly from their mothers and from nursing. Pet's can also pick up roundworms from ingesting parasite egg's in soil or other contaminated items, or by ingesting rodents that may be infected.
Humans may also become infected with roundworms. Proper hand washing and hygiene is the best prevention from picking up these parasites.
Routine f***l checks as well as deworming is recommended to keep your pet's free from these unwanted pests.

Vaccine Spotlight🔆
The Lyme vaccine helps to prevent Lyme disease, a tick carried disease. This is a recommended vaccination for pets with high-risk lifestyles and in highly tick populated areas, such as Wisconsin. Even with the use of this vaccine, we still need to be diligent with tick prevention methods, as there are many other diseases that ticks can carry. Topical or oral flea and tick prevention is recommended year round to prevent ticks from attaching an spreading diseases as well.
