The last couple of Springs, we here on the East side of the San Francisco Bay, have seen an increase in rattlesnakes in the hills we frequent. Many new pet parents ask me about the vaccine. Studies continue to be done, but no real data has proven it to be successful for dogs yet.

This article was prefaced by Cory Wolliver, a veterinary expert in venomous bites.
He wrote this to another veterinarian getting pushback for not administering the rattlesnake vaccine to dogs.
"That’s true the vaccine has conditional licensing. They probably won’t ever get more than that because there’s nothing else on the market and the company refuses to show data that it actually works in DOGS. The data was somewhat supportive for mice, but the real world data that currently exists for dogs shows no evidence of protection. Stand your ground on this. If the company could show real world data and trial data that it works, we’d be happy to change our stance. But I don’t think they ever will because it truly doesn’t seem to protect.
Anecdotally I’ve never seen protection either. I’ve had to treat the patients exactly the same whether they are vaccinated or not."

Unfortunately, some vets will recommend the rattlesnake vaccine. Touted to “buy time” getting to an emergency clinic or even to ward off the envenomation, the rattlesnake vaccine is an often used but poorly supported treatment for dogs. There is no evidence to support the vaccine being effective...
