Someone is back to work!

Fringe has been sitting around for the last year. Just didn’t make time for her. Time for her to have a job or find a new zip code so here we go.

We started with some lunging getting her brain back into working mode, and getting her body moving again. A former student of mine, who rides Saddlebreds, is looking for a horse to hunt this fall, is getting some saddle time in on Fringe.

Today is the first day I’ve sat behind these ears in 2 years. I’m looking forward to many more hours behind them.

Fringe has spent the last month living in Galena walking up/down a hilly pasture. It’s been a great way for her to self condition. My friend Liz hacked her a few times and decided no better time than the present and took her hunting down at Wayne DuPage in their 3rd field. She says Fringe was a good girl, a little tense in the beginning, then very well behaved and happy to stand quietly on a loose rein at checks. Got a little squirrelly when cantering in some tall grass and a branch touched her unexpectedly, but quickly settled and went back to work.

Yay! Maybe when my life settles down a bit I’ll have a horse I can hunt in the field.

There is no such thing as the “wrong horse”.

Not every horse that comes into your life will be exactly what you want, in fact very few will be, but whether the come temporarily, or stay forever, every horse comes for a reason.

That reason is not always clear. It can feel like all some horses bring is stress, pain and heartache. It can sometimes feel so ‘wrong’ that you can’t see how any good could ever come from it.

But the most valuable lessons come from the ‘wrong’ horses.

When you get up after eating dirt after being thrown for the third time that ride, you’ll find resilience you never knew you had.

When your tired of sitting at the side lines, watching your friends having fun whilst your horse is still chapters behind, you’ll find patience within yourself that you didn’t know was there.

When your sick of spending every ride questioning your ability and second guessing yourself, you’ll dig deep and find the self belief that’s always been hidden inside you.

And when you meet a horse that is so broken, even giving the very best of yourself won’t fix it, you’ll find a selflessness in you to make sure that horse never knows anything but love.

Patience, resilience, determination, selflessness aren’t easy lessons, but we’re better riders for learning them.

You may think you’ve got the “wrong horse”, but you’ve actually got the right horse to teach the hardest lessons.

Learn well.

Fringe is a little off, and I’m trying really hard to reconnect with her. To find that great working relationship we had before the Makeover. So today we played with our old toys. I was happy to see she hasn’t forgotten any thing. Funny how she can spook at a horse kicking in a stall, or a “gator”/“mule” utv going by, but all this stuff is fine. After the video I found the yoga ball and played with that a few mins. She doesn’t care about it either. I can bounce it off her, roll under her, throw it over her. She doesn’t care.

I have owned Fringe for 3 years now. This is THE FIRST TIME anyone (including myself) had ever seen this horse laying down to rest. I’ve seen her roll - indoor arena, grass pasture, and mud, but no one has ever seen her lay down to sleep/rest. Even when I asked the Nightwatch people in Kentucky for the Makeover, no one ever caught her down sleeping. At least at the Makeover I knew she had because of the shavings on her body and in her mane/tail.

This was the best thing!!

Fringe has been doing pretty well. Been taking it nice and easy getting her back to work.

Her schedule for the last week

Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Saturday & Sunday.

Got a little canter today but broke after a few strides. When she picked it back up got a bit silly and I was the only person about, so didn’t push the envelope and back to trot work. If she throws one of her huge bucks and I come off, no knowing how long I might be laying there needing help… best to play it safe, tomorrow is another day.

Edit - I’ve not used any of the ConfidenceEQ gel the past few rides.
