Screwworm: Florida issued an emergency rule in June blocking shelter and rescue dogs and cats from states with confirmed screwworm detections, starting with Texas and New Mexico. Adopting or rescuing from out of state? Check the current rules first.
Gel eye masks: An ASPCA study linked chewed reusable gel migraine caps, eye masks, and wraps to suspected acrylamide poisoning in 45 dogs. Store them where dogs can't reach.
Mushrooms: One dog ate a toxic Amanita on a walk and couldn't stand within hours. South Florida's rainy season brings mushrooms up fast. If your dog eats one, snap a photo, remove any remains, and call your vet right away.

Some fun facts about dogs & their sniff walks:👃 Super sniffers: A dog's sense of smell is 10,000 to 100,000x more sensitive than ours, with up to 300 million scent receptors vs. our 5 million.

↔️ Independent nostrils: Dogs can move each nostril separately, which helps them pinpoint exactly where a scent is coming from.

🧠 Mental enrichment: Letting your dog sniff freely on walks (aka "smell-o-vision") reduces stress and gives them vital mental stimulation.
