This is a Keeled Rat Snake (Ptyas carinata), one of the animals Kevin has rescued from the skin and medicinal trade, and he’s working through every one of them for parasites. She’s striking at him and at the camera the whole time, and it looks like aggression, but she’s in a tub with a hand in it and she can’t get away, so she lunges, and every one of those lunges is her trying to make the threat leave. Kevin points out the twisting and the neck flattening, which is what a mamba does when it’s cornered, and then she starts growling at him, the same growl a king cobra makes. After that she settled, and he put her back to limit her stress levels. What an incredible animal.

This is one of our NERD line coral albino Water Monitors (Varanus salvator), and she’s egg bound. She has never been bred, but her body started cycling anyway and she produced a clutch of infertile eggs, and now she’s unable to pass them, which is a problem that happens with monitors. A good comparison would be a human baby that’s breech. Eggs that stay inside her start to break down and can turn septic, and if she can’t get them out it can kill her.

Kevin gave her a little lidocaine and went in through the body wall with a large gauge syringe to drain the eggs down, so she has a chance of passing them. After that he put her in water with calcium and D3 so she stays hydrated and her muscles have what they need to push. The next day he was able to work one of the eggs out by hand, and we’re still working with her every day. We’ll keep you posted on how she does!

We call her Snow White. Kevin started the ivory water monitor line with one animal, and this is one of her kids.
They actually hatch with a lot of melanin. With every shed a little more of the dark goes away, until you end up with a white adult with dark nails and a red pupil. He thinks it’s probably recessive, which would be rad. Fingers crossed we can convince him to sell a couple because these guys are smokin! Pray for us. 🫠🙏🏽

A Mangrove snake in the act of laying her eggs is not a common sight, finding 2 clutches on the same day is just a treat!
