MEET OUR TEAM | SAM 🐾

This week, we’re introducing you to Sam, Lead Veterinary Technician at CORE Veterinary Surgical Clinic.

With decades of experience in veterinary medicine, Sam has developed extensive expertise in surgical care, anesthesia, and sedation, supporting patients through everything from routine procedures to complex surgeries.

As Lead Veterinary Technician, Sam helps ensure that each surgical day runs smoothly while keeping patient safety and attentive care at the center of her work. Her experience also extends beyond caring for patients. Sam is passionate about mentoring the next generation of veterinary anesthesia technicians, sharing the knowledge and skills she has developed throughout her career.

For Sam, being part of a strong veterinary team means combining technical expertise with collaboration, consistency, and a shared commitment to every patient entrusted to CORE’s care.

And when she’s not at CORE? 📸🎶⚾

Sam enjoys photographing birds, cheering for her son from the sidelines at baseball games, and making sure the CORE team gets a healthy dose of 90s hip hop along the way.

STRAIGHT TO THE CORE: Is My Pet Too Old For Anesthesia

This is the question we hear most, and the honest answer is that age is not a disease.

Age doesn't cause anesthetic risk. Disease does. So the real question isn't how old your pet is, it's what their kidneys, liver and heart are doing right now. A healthy 9-year-old may be a better candidate than an unwell five-year-old.

That's why the workup comes first. Bloodwork tells us how your pet clears the drugs we're about to give, and it genuinely changes the plan. Sometimes it means we tell you to wait.

At CORE, anesthesia monitoring isn't something a team member handles alongside other responsibilities. An anesthesia technician stays with your pet from induction through recovery, continuously monitoring vital signs. That matters because a problem under anesthesia announces itself in seconds, not minutes.

The risk is never zero. It is manageable and managing it is a full-time role here.

MEET OUR TEAM | JAMES "JIM" 🐾

This week, we’re introducing you to Jim, Certified Veterinary Technician and Surgical Anesthetist at CORE Veterinary Surgical Clinic.

A graduate of Becker College’s Veterinary Technology program, Jim has more than 12 years of experience specializing in veterinary anesthesia, surgical patient care, and operating room management. Throughout his career, one thing has remained constant: patient safety is his highest priority and passion.

At CORE, Jim plays an important role throughout the surgical process, monitoring patients under sedation and anesthesia, overseeing anesthetic recovery, and helping ensure the surgical team is prepared to provide the highest standard of care. His calm, methodical approach is especially valuable when caring for patients before, during, and after surgery.

His experience includes eight years at Tufts VETS, where he managed anesthesia for patients ranging from routine procedures to medically fragile cases and supported emergency surgeries and critically ill patients.

And when he’s not at CORE? 🐱🎶🌳
Jim specializes in a different set of skills: dad jokes and puns, collecting vinyl records, and caring for his cats and bonsai trees.

STRAIGHT TO THE CORE: The Snoring Is Not Cute

Loud breathing at rest is not a breed quirk. It is an airway working too hard.

Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome, or BOAS, is a combination of anatomical abnormalities that can restrict a dog’s ability to breathe normally. These may include narrowed nostrils, an elongated soft palate, and changes to the larynx. Because these breathing sounds are common among certain breeds, owners may assume they are normal when they can actually indicate airway obstruction.

Signs worth discussing with your veterinarian may include snoring or noisy breathing at rest, gagging or retching, tiring quickly during walks or play, sleeping with the head elevated, difficulty tolerating heat or exercise, or blue-tinged gums.

For some dogs, surgery can improve airflow by widening the nostrils and addressing an elongated soft palate or other airway abnormalities. Earlier evaluation can be important because prolonged airway obstruction may contribute to progressive changes in the larynx.

Today we're celebrating the dogs who make our lives brighter in countless ways.

They are hiking partners, running buddies, couch companions, adventure seekers, and faithful friends. They celebrate our happiest moments, stay by our side through the hardest ones, and somehow always know exactly when we need them most.

At CORE Veterinary Surgical Clinic, we're honored to help dogs get back to doing what they love, whether that's chasing a tennis ball, hiking a favorite trail, greeting the family at the door, or simply enjoying a comfortable walk around the neighborhood.

MEET OUR TEAM | KARA 🐾

This week, we’re introducing you to Kara Jordan, Office Manager at CORE Veterinary Surgical Clinic.

With more than 12 years of experience in specialty surgical and emergency veterinary hospitals, Kara plays an important role in keeping CORE moving forward. From coordinating complex surgical schedules and consultations to supporting clients before and after surgery, Kara helps ensure that patients, families, referring veterinarians, and the CORE team have the support they need.

A graduate of UMass Amherst, Kara earned her degree in Animal Science with minors in Biology and Psychology. After graduation, she began working in the veterinary field and quickly found her stride collaborating in surgery with a dynamic team.

What continues to inspire Kara is the people around her. She values the CORE team’s unwavering compassion and dedication, not only to every patient and family, but also to one another.

Kara has also contributed to the advancement of veterinary medicine as a co-author of a 2022 publication in the Veterinary Surgery Journal, supporting the research through data management and quality review.

And when she’s not at CORE? 📸🥾

Kara enjoys photography, exploring new places, and hiking with her loyal companion, Bowie.

STRAIGHT TO THE CORE: Surgery Recovery As The Evenings Cool Off

Your pet came home from surgery today, and the evenings are cooling off.

Mid-eighties by afternoon, mid-sixties overnight. Neither is extreme, but anesthesia disrupts temperature regulation for a day or two afterward, so your pet is not adjusting to that swing the way it normally would.

A shaved surgical site has lost its insulation, and a groggy pet will not get up and find a warmer spot. Add a blanket and close the window you would normally leave cracked. No heating pads against the skin, ever. A sedated pet cannot move away from something too hot, and pad burns are a real post-operative injury.

The incision stays dry either way. Morning dew and wet grass count. Leash-only bathroom breaks, and bring a towel.

Call us for frantic panting, brick red or pale gums, shivering, vomiting. Post-operative infection looks like all of it, so either way it is a call worth making.

MEET OUR TEAM | CHARLA 🐾

This week, we’re introducing you to Charla, Technician Assistant at CORE Veterinary Surgical Clinic.

With more than a decade of experience in veterinary medicine, Charla brings a diverse background in specialty surgery, animal behavior, wellness care, client education, and team leadership to CORE.

Working alongside our veterinary surgeons, Charla helps prepare patients for surgery, supports advanced surgical procedures, monitors recovery, maintains the sterile surgical environment, and helps families better understand their pet’s treatment plan.

Her lifelong love of animals began during childhood, inspired by adventures and lessons from her father. Today, that same curiosity and love of learning continue to fuel her work at CORE, where she enjoys developing new skills and being there for pets and the families who love them.

Charla’s experience with animal behavior and positive reinforcement training also brings an important perspective to patient care, helping her approach each animal with patience, compassion, and an understanding of their individual needs.

And when the scrubs come off? You might find Charla laughing over coffee, cooking, doing Pilates, or heading out on a spontaneous food-filled adventure with her partner and two children.

Most of what pet owners learn about surgery arrives in a hurry, in a hallway, on one of the worst days of the month. That is not when anyone absorbs anything.

So every Wednesday we are taking one thing, the kind of thing that usually gets ninety seconds in an exam room, and giving it the space it deserves.

Why that limp keeps coming back. Whether your senior dog is really too old for anesthesia. What board-certified actually means. Why the snoring is not cute.
