As farming modernized and the need for herding declined, the breed's extreme trainability and courage allowed them to transition into versatile modern working roles. Today, German Shepherds excel in police and military K-9 units for tracking and guard duty, utilize their powerful sense of smell in search and rescue missions, and serve as dedicated assistance.
