Did you know your dog’s health actually starts with their toes? 🐾
It might seem like a small thing, but keeping those nails trimmed is one of the best ways to keep their whole body feeling great!
As an Integrative Veterinarian for over 30 years, here is why short nails are a big deal:
🟢 The “Happy Paw” (Short Nails)
When nails are the right length, your dog can stand flat on their pads.
• Perfect Balance: Their weight is spread out evenly.
• Smooth Moving: Their joints stay lined up naturally, which prevents “wear and tear.”
• Comfort: Walking feels easy and pain-free!
🔴 The “Ouchy Paw” (Long Nails)
If nails get too long, they act like tiny levers that push the toes upward every time they take a step.
• Joint Stress: This forces the bones into weird positions.
• Pain Points: It creates “hot spots” of pressure instead of a flat, comfy step.
• The Chain Reaction: Because their feet hurt, they change how they walk, which can eventually make their knees, elbows, and even their spine sore.
🧘 The “Whole-Dog” View
In integrative care, we look at how one small part affects the whole body. If a dog’s feet aren’t level, their entire “alignment” is off—kind of like how wearing shoes that are too small might eventually make your back hurt!
✅ What You Can Do
1. Check the Click: If you hear “click-click-click” on the floor, it’s time for a trim!
2. Ask a Pro: Always talk to your veterinarian or a professional groomer to learn the safest way to trim nails without hitting the “quick.”
3. Keep it Regular: Making nail trims a habit keeps your pup moving smoothly for years to come.
