While we were away this past fall, HMF was very lucky to be awarded a Grant from Grey Muzzle Organization for two of our Senior Dogs Texas and Walker. Here is a delayed announcement!

🎉Senior Dogs are WINNING today!! We're thrilled to announce that HMF was one of 119 grant recipients awarded funding from the $1.57 million distributed by The Grey Muzzle Organization to support lifesaving efforts for senior dogs like Texas and Walker.

This critical funding supports animal shelters and rescues across USA, France and Nepal in developing senior-focused programs - including medical ands dental care, surrender prevention, hospice care, and adoption incentives. This allowed us to get needed dental care as well as mass removals for both of these boys!

A huge thank you to Grey Muzzle and their generous supporters for making this possible and for believing in a time where every senior dog finds safety, love and a soft landing.

Texas is in the red collar and has a little more grey than Walker!

hey hmf followers....we got a Dixie update 😻

She came through surgery like a champ!

Dixie says thank you to all that donated to help her get her CCL fixed. She is day 2 post surgery and handling the "downtime" well. She has a nerve blocker on board that will last about another 24 hours and is already started oral pain meds so she can transition well.

If you would like to contribute to Dixie's care, hit that Donation button on the top of our FB page!

Sharing a couple of pics of her ice time... she is not a huge fan, but tolerated very well.

Good Morning HMF Followers -

🐶We need your help! Please share this post, we would really appreciate it.

There is a crisis in dog rescue as I am sure everyone is aware of, check any rescue page, county animal shelter, or village animal shelter...everyone is full and there are more dogs coming in everyday. What happens when the shelters are full and rescues have no room? Well there are several things, dogs get turned loose, rehomed to less than desirable groups/people or longer residents at the shelter get euthanized for space.

This is the dog rescue reality. When we started Hedd Mutt, and still today, we would get told "I bet you are having so much fun, with all those dogs" , no rescue is not fun, it hard, it is emotional, however, it is one of the most rewarding things we have ever done, that is why folks do it. Now not everyone is ready or able to be in the thick of it and see the disgusting and unimaginable things people are capable of and that is all right, there are so many ways to be involved to help the dogs, to include not even having a dog in your home.

So our ask is this...we are rebuilding, we are in need and looking for fosters and volunteers.

For fostering - there are a couple options that we would love to discuss with those interested - you could foster a sanctuary dog for their live, you could be an emergency/vacation foster - which is would be for up to 1-2 weeks or we work together to find a great fit for you from a shelter and you help us get that pup ready for their adoptive home or you decide to adopt them yourself.

For volunteering - we need dog walkers for sanctuary dogs, and then as we rebuild will need help with admin type stuff.

If you are interesting in joining Hedd Mutt in a foster or volunteer capacity, email us at [email protected].

Here are some cute faces for inspiration.

Hey human hold that cup right there, I need to get all the good stuff!!

Our Allie girl is quite the character, she knows what she wants and is going to let you know. This goes for belly rubs too. Once she rolls over you better not ignore the belly. 🤣

Allie has been with HMF for awhile and we love to find her a permanent foster, this is because Allie does have mild seizures that are completely controlled at this time with daily medication. She will be turning 8 this year and weighs around 60lbs, but is needed to shed a few of those.

Allie came to HMF in 2019 and was adopted out to a couple, after almost a year we got a call that they needed to return Allie as she was not "bonding" with the wife. Now anybody that has met Allie would not believe that at all, she not a clingy dog, but she does like to see what her humans are doing, yes that is a polite way to say she is nosey, but highly lovable.

Allie would like to be an only dog, and she is vocal about that when another dog is in her space. Due to her medications our intent is for Allie to stay in the HMF Sanctuary program so HMF can provide for her medications. While she is well cared for and loved here she would really like her own couch and humans who can give her more time and belly rubs than a sanctuary environment.

If you are Allie's human please email us at [email protected] and we can have you meet Allie and see that belly for yourself.

Sunday Funday Greetings.

Update on Sully, he went on his first volunteer outing yesterday, thank you Jennifer Dee Pollack.

He had a great time, and got to do a bit of exploring and get Pup Cup, and it seems like he really enjoyed it.
We started doggie interactions today, and for his first attempt it went well, he needs to learn how to "dog" for sure. He was a bundle of energy and was not sure what to do with himself, and kept running into the other dog, 🤣. The great news is that it was all positive interactions and we will keep working on it.

Enjoy the cuteness overload with that underbite and teefers.

Happy New Year!

Unfortunately, Dixie is starting off the New Year with a bang that she was not expecting.
Dixie injured her leg on the 1st and a quick trip to the vet on the 2nd, confirmed our suspicion that she had a CCL tear in her left rear leg. She will be undergoing TTA-2 surgery this coming Thursday the 8th of Jan.

For those new to HMF Dixie was brought into the rescue from Bolingbrook Animal Shelter in the summer of 2021, Dixie was never received proper socialization early in life and as an adult dog she did the best she could to overcome her "bossy" approach in meeting dogs. Then due to separation anxiety and fearful behaviors with storms and other loud noise, she was undesirable to most adopters. Dixie joined the sanctuary program in the early 2024, but in 2025 our amazing fosters Sabrina and Lou stepped up to give Dixie a home to help better work through things and have a quite environment in which to do that vs a kennel environment.

Well, now Dixie needs some help. IF you are able to share Dixie and help us raise funds for her surgery so she can be ready for squirrel chasing again she would be quite appreciative.

Happy Holiday’s to all that have supported us over the years!!

Warning – Long Post! TL:DR – Hedd Mutt Foundation will reorganize and come back.

It’s been a while since we have been active on social media, and during this time there have been numerous conversations, debates, tears and difficult decisions to be made or not made as our hearts are torn in so many directions, but at the end of the day it is the dogs that matter, not the people. Yes, it takes people to make a rescue, sanctuary or any other program work and run, but not just any people, so what we do know is that we have to find our people, OUR TRIBE, to make Hedd Mutt what we sat out to do 9 years ago today.

We are extremely lucky to have a few people that have been here through it with us. Jennifer Dee Pollack has been with us since the beginning, cried and laughed with us, a 2-time adopter and an unwavering volunteer. We were ever so lucky to find Sabrina Ramos and Lou, they step in and stood by one of our toughest medical cases and loses, then jumped back in to give Dixie a home, which she needed so badly.

So how does a rescue survive with an unpaid staff of 3 (that work full time and welcomed a baby boy) and 3 invaluable volunteers? It has not been easy, we pivoted from rescue to sanctuary for the 6 pups that we have not been able to find homes for or have been returned for various reasons. Of those six, 2 have never found a home, 3 were returned (owner death, dog not bonding with wife, after almost 2 years I may add, and a change of circumstances that was no longer good for the dog) then we have 1 in permanent foster. We have not been very active since Covid, so guess how these dogs are taken care of financially, 30% donations, yes 30%, however, our choice we became inactive in the fundraising arena, due to various reasons, but mostly people. We did secure a grant from Gray Muzzle that provided dental care for 2 of our seniors, that was so helpful, and we are grateful for these opportunities, especially since all 6 sanctuary dogs are seniors now.

Here is the long and short, we love this, and while there were many, and I mean many individuals, organizations and other rescues that did their best to make us look as if we were not fit to be in the rescue world, based on our training methods of utilize the tools that worked the best for a dog and their situation (prong and e-collar, with positive reward and not rewarding negative behavior with “just give them a treat”), we have decided that the dogs are worth it. We are not 100% certain what the new year will look like for us, but what we do know is we are strong and resourceful.

With all of everything that has happened in the last 2-3 years, both in the rescue and personally, it is time to return to what we know is right and that is making it all about the dogs! If you have followed our story, you know that when we use to foster for other rescues we started a Christmas tradition and always got a new foster the week of, then when we started Hedd Mutt Foundation we did the same or something else special each holiday season, but not for the last several years, and it made us sad. We decided to change that this year and help a four legged guy in need!!

Please welcome Sully to Hedd Mutt Foundation! Thank you, Miranda Whitlock-Ell, for making us aware of this guy’s situation and his need for help as well as helping his family feel better that he was going to a place that would care for him. Sully comes to us through a medical situation for his human. Sully is a wonderful 6-year-old Victorian Bulldog, he has been to out vet and is in good health. He has some skin issues, but it is believed that it is all due to the flea infestation that he had, that was taken care of by the wonderful folks that were caring for Sully before he came to HMF. He is on an antibiotic for a short stint to see if it all clears up. There will be more to come about Sully as he begins his journey here at HMF. If you would like to support Sully in his care, donations are always welcome.

Happy Holidays to all and thank you to Sully for bringing us back to center!
