Some patients come for an exam. Some come for vaccines. Some come because they’re not feeling their best.

But no matter what brings them through our doors (or brings us through theirs), there’s one thing we’re always happy to give freely—love. 🩵

A cuddle while we listen to a heart. A few extra scratches before the next step. A lap to sit on when someone needs a little reassurance. And sometimes… just holding them for a minute because we can. 🥹🐾

Around here, Fridays are for snuggles. And we take that job very seriously. 🐶🐱

As Su***de Prevention Month comes to a close, we want to take a moment to talk about something that sits especially close to our hearts in veterinary medicine.

People enter this profession because they care deeply. They love animals, they want to help, and they want to make a difference in the lives of pets and the people who love them. But caring this deeply can come with a weight that isn’t always visible from the outside. Veterinary professionals experience an increased risk of su***de compared with the general population, and behind that statistic are real people who spend their days giving so much of themselves to others.

There are days filled with puppy kisses, kitten cuddles, happy reunions and patients we’ve had the privilege of watching grow old. There are also days filled with difficult diagnoses, heartbreaking goodbyes, impossible conversations and cases that stay in our hearts long after we’ve gone home. Sometimes, all of those things happen in the very same day.

So as September comes to an end, we want to use this moment for something simple: to say thank you.

Thank you to the veterinarians who carry the responsibility of making incredibly difficult decisions while still finding a way to kneel on the floor and make a nervous pet feel safe. Thank you to the technicians, assistants, CSRs and every person behind the scenes who comforts scared animals, holds the hands of grieving families, celebrates the victories and feels the losses right alongside them.

And especially to our own team at The Welcome Waggin’: we see the heart you put into this work. We see how deeply you care about the pets who come through our doors and the ones who welcome us into their homes. We see the extra moments you give, the cases you think about after hours and the pieces of your heart you leave with the families we serve.

To our colleagues throughout veterinary medicine, please remember that the person underneath the scrubs matters just as much as the patients you care for.

You are more than the difficult case. More than the outcome you couldn’t change. More than the appointment that broke your heart. And you matter far beyond the work that you do.

Always enter rooms where people are smarter than you. ❤️

Last week I spent a few days in Rochester, New York, with some of my favorite women in veterinary medicine: My VMG mastermind group, Group 68.

There are 10 of us from all over the country, and for more than three years now, we’ve been meeting twice a year trying to figure out this crazy mobile veterinary business model together.

And we all do it differently.

Some are completely in-home. Some have full-service veterinary trucks. Some have a brick-and-mortar practice along with mobile care, like we do at The Welcome Waggin’. We come from New York, Maine, North Carolina, Maryland, Virginia, Texas, Arizona and beyond.

But after three years, it really isn’t just about business anymore.

These women have become the people who root us on when things are going great and the people who understand when they aren’t.

We’ve laughed together. We’ve cried together. We’ve watched each other’s businesses grow and change. We’ve watched each other grow and change. And we’ve been there for each other when life outside of veterinary medicine gets really hard, too.

There is something different about sitting in a room with people who truly get what’s at stake. They understand the responsibility of owning a practice, taking care of a team, trying to practice great medicine, and somehow trying to have a life at the same time.

I always come home from these trips with pages and pages of notes and about 100 new ideas for The Welcome Waggin’. 😂🐾

But I also come home really grateful.

Grateful to have women in my life who will celebrate the wins, sit with me through the hard stuff, challenge my thinking, share what they’ve learned, and genuinely want to see each other succeed.

Always enter rooms where people are smarter than you.

And if you’re lucky enough to find your people in one of those rooms, keep showing up. ❤️

The Welcome Waggin’ is doing some pretty amazing things, and I’m so proud that we get to represent the Plainfield community and the western suburbs of Chicago in this group.

We get to show what’s possible when you create and foster a team of kick-butt veterinary professionals who want to do veterinary medicine differently—and do it better.

And we’re just getting started. ❤️🐾

Cats are masters at two things: judging us… and hiding when something’s wrong. 👀🐱

Seriously. A cat can be uncomfortable, painful, or not feeling their best and still act almost completely normal.

That’s why routine veterinary care is so important for our feline friends. Small changes in weight, appetite, grooming habits, litter box behavior, activity, or even personality can sometimes be the first clue that something is going on.

And we know a trip to the vet isn’t exactly every cat’s idea of a good time. 😹

That’s why at The Welcome Waggin’, we give our feline patients options.

🏡 Stay on their home turf with an in-home visit
🐾 Come to our Care Center, where we have a cats-only exam room away from the hustle and bustle of our canine patients

Either way, our goal is the same: less stress, plenty of patience, and care that meets your cat where they’re comfortable.
